मंगलवार को हुई मतगणना में किसी भी दल को बहुमत नहीं मिल पाया, लेकिन BJP के पास सबसे ज़्यादा 104 विधायक हैं, जो बहुमत के आंकड़े से कम हैं. उधर, कांग्रेस और JDS ने मिलकर सरकार बनाने की कवायद शुरू कर दी थी, और राज्य के राजनैतिक पटल पर हलचल मची रही, क्योंकि BJP भी सरकार बनाने के लिए ज़रूरी आंकड़ा जुटा लेने का दावा कर रही थी.
कांग्रेस का कहना था कि खंडित जनादेश के बाद राज्यपाल के पास उनके और JDS के गठबंधन को आमंत्रित करने के अलावा कोई विकल्प नहीं है. पार्टी ने यह भी कहा था कि वह आशा करती है कि राज्यपाल संवैधानिक प्रावधानों और स्थापित परिपाटी के मुताबिक कांग्रेस-JDS गठबंधन को सरकार बनाने के लिए आमंत्रित करेंगे.
कर्नाटक विधानसभा चुनाव में भले ही किसी पार्टी को स्पष्ट बहुमत नहीं मिला, लेकिन 2013 के चुनाव से तुलना करें, तो इस बार सबसे ज्यादा फायदे में BJP रही है, और सबसे अधिक नुकसान कांग्रेस को हुआ है. कांग्रेस इस बार 38 फीसदी वोटों के साथ 78 सीटें ही जीत पाई, हालांकि पिछले विधानसभा चुनाव में उसे 36.6 फीसदी वोटों के साथ उसने 122 सीटें जीती थीं. BJP ने इस बार अपनी सीटों की संख्या में ढाई गुना से भी ज्यादा बढ़ोतरी की है. इस बार भाजपा को 36.2 फीसदी वोटों के साथ 104 सीटें हासिल हुई हैं, जबकि 2013 के चुनाव में उसे सिर्फ 20 फीसदी वोट मिले थे और उसने 40 सीटें जीती थीं. सीटों और मत प्रतिशत के हिसाब से देखें तो JDS के प्रदर्शन पर कोई खास फर्क नहीं पड़ा है. इस बार JDS को 18.5 फीसदी वोटों के साथ 37 सीटें मिली हैं. 2013 में उसे करीब 20 फीसदी वोटों के साथ 40 सीटें मिली थीं.
