PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Sameer Rizvi wins the award for his match-winning 70* off 47. Rizvi says the management has backed him to bat at number 4 and express himself, and he looked to do exactly that tonight. Sameer mentions that his familiarity with conditions in Lucknow helped, and that he aimed to bat with a positive approach in the powerplay. However, after a couple of early wickets, he and Tristan Stubbs spoke about taking their time. Rizvi shares that once set, they looked to play their natural game through to the end and focused on putting the bad balls away, especially with conditions being challenging for batters.
The bowlers executed well - Axar Patel, the victorious skipper of the Delhi Capitals, jokingly says that the match got finished early. He admits that it got a bit close in the middle, but they knew they just needed one partnership to seal the game. Patel mentions that he is very happy with the bowling performance. Let's hear from Tristan Stubbs - Stubbs says he wasn’t even fully padded up when he had to walk in, but it was pretty clear what the job was, which was to spend time at the crease and bat sensibly. He praises Sameer Rizvi’s innings, calling it magnificent, and notes that the wicket had a bit in it early on with some swing and nip. Tristan highlights that Rizvi takes on spin naturally, which made things easier for him, and all he had to do was just rotate the strike. Mentions that they knew one good over could change the equation, and once that came, it became a run-a-ball chase. Stubbs tells that there wasn’t a specific plan to take on Shahbaz Ahamad, but the talk between him and Rizvi was about assessing whether the ball was spinning. He adds that the role for Ayush Badoni is clearly defined, especially when they lose early wickets, with Badoni expected to step in and stabilise. Strong start goes in vain - Lucknow can take plenty of positives from their bowling effort, especially the way they came out firing in the Powerplay. Mohammad Shami struck off the very first ball, while Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav chipped in as well to reduce DC to 26/4 and put them firmly on the back foot. However, they couldn’t build on that early momentum and failed to create enough opportunities as the innings progressed. In their eagerness to push harder, they ended up conceding too many extras, 20 in total, including 16 wides, which proved costly in a low-scoring game. Anrich Nortje couldn’t quite make the impact they were hoping for and was expensive, while the 2.1 overs from the spinners went for 35 runs, allowing the momentum to shift decisively in favour of the Capitals.
Batting woes sink LSG - Earlier in the game, LSG posted what looked like a below-par total, never quite managing to stitch together any meaningful partnerships. The top order failed to make an impact, with only Marsh’s 35 offering some resistance, while Abdul Samad chipped in with a valuable 36 to push them past the 140 mark. Beyond that, it was a disappointing outing with the bat, lacking both momentum and stability. For DC, T Natarajan was the standout performer with the ball, claiming an impressive three-fer, while Lungi Ngidi also had three wickets to his name. Kuldeep and Axar complemented the effort well, sharing three wickets between them to keep LSG firmly in check.
Capitals recover to clinch it - Delhi Capitals were rocked early, losing Rahul for a golden duck off the very first ball, and things only got worse as they found themselves reeling at 33/4 at the end of the Powerplay. At the halfway stage, it looked like it would be a comfortable chase, but Delhi were made to work hard after early setbacks. Sameer Rizvi was at the heart of the victory, while Stubbs' calm presence proved crucial in guiding them over the line.
