Wide! Madhav Tiwari gets it all wrong. He tries to bang it into the surface but the ball gets stuck in his hand and does not come out right. It almost lands at his feet before it bounces again beside the strip on the leg side. Shreyas Iyer thought about going after it but then bailed out. Since the second bounce was beyond the crease, it has been deemed a wide and not a No Ball.

OUT! STRAIGHT UP AND CAUGHT! A big moment for the youngster as he is rewarded with a wicket in the very first over. Madhav lands it fuller and outside off, and this one curves away late from the left-hander. Arya looks to loft it inside out, but slices it high towards deep point due to the movement. Gets no timing at all and Sahil Parakh takes a simple catch in the deep. Tiwari probed the batters and has picked up his maiden wicket in the IPL. PBKS are 97/2 in 9 overs.

FOUR BYES! Free runs for the Punjab Kings! Madhav Tiwari bowls it on a good length, on the fifth stump, not much movement. STRATEGIC BREAK! This has been an eventful start to the first game of the season in Dharamsala. It could have been far worse for the Delhi Capitals after Punjab Kings raced to 51 in the first three overs, but DC responded well by conceding just 21 runs in the next three. Auqib Nabi has shown the way by hitting the right lengths and getting the ball to seam around off the surface. How long the movement continues for the quicks remains to be seen. The bell has been rung, and we are all set to get going. Raunak Kapoor mentions that it is a chilly evening, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 13 degrees Celsius tonight. Arya will face the first ball. A slip in place. Let's play...
Impact sub options for DC - Ashutosh Sharma, Sameer Rizvi, Tripurana Vijay, Pathum Nissanka and Vipraj Nigam.
Delhi Capitals (Playing XI) - Abishek Porel (In for Nitish Rana), KL Rahul (WK), Sahil Parakh (In for Sameer Rizvi), Tristan Stubbs, David Miller (In for Pathum Nissanka), Axar Patel (C), Madhav Tiwari (In for Vipraj Nigam), Mukesh Kumar, Auqib Nabi (In for Kuldeep Yadav), Lungi Ngidi and Mitchell Starc.
Impact sub options for PBKS - Harpreet Brar, Yash Thakur, Xavier Bartlett, Vishnu Vinod and Praveen Dubey.
Punjab Kings (Playing XI) - Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (C), Suryansh Shedge, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Marco Jansen, Ben Dwarshuis (On IPL debut) (In for Lockie Ferguson), Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal.
The skipper of the Punjab Kings - Shreyas Iyer says it is difficult to judge how pitches are playing until teams actually get out there and bat on them. Mentions that there is no need to think too much about the points table at this stage, with the focus instead being on getting the small details right and backing instincts in pressure situations. According to Shreyas, that is one area where the side has fallen short in the last few matches. He also acknowledges that ups and downs are part and parcel of the IPL, and says the key is to consistently bring out the best performance possible. Iyer confirms that Ben Dwarshuis comes into the side for Lockie Ferguson, who is dealing with a slight niggle.
The captain of the Delhi Capitals - Axar Patel cheekily admits that the toss is the only thing which has gone their way in recent games. Also says they have been losing crucial moments in the game, but quickly adds that they have been playing good cricket. On DC still being mathematically alive in the season, Axar says they do not want to rely on other teams or worry about results. He adds that, irrespective of what happens, they just want to play their brand of cricket and take it as a team. He adds that when you win, you enjoy it, so whenever you have the time, you should make the most of it. On whether they are chasing because they have been doing it well this season, Axar clarifies that it is more about the conditions. He says it is a fresh wicket in Dharamsala and a high-scoring ground, and with it being their first game here, they do not really know how it plays. He adds that it usually swings a bit with the new ball for the fast bowlers, so they want to put the opposition in first and see how the surface behaves. Informs that they have five changes in the playing XI, with Abishek Porel, Sahil Parakh, David Miller, Auqib Nabi and Madhav Tiwari coming into the side.
TOSS - Time for the flip of the coin. The two captains are present in the middle. Axar Patel calls it correctly. Delhi Capitals opt to BOWL first.
DEBUT ALERT - Australia's left-arm seamer, Ben Dwarshuis, has been handed his maiden cap by Arshdeep Singh in the Punjab huddle. He is all set to make his debut for the Kings, but who makes way for him?
Time to hear from DC's pacer - Lungi Ngidi, on being asked about his injury scare, says he is fine now, and all is good. Admits that it was a bit of a scary time for him, and it served as a big reality check. On failing to defend 264 in the previous game against PBKS, he admits he was flabbergasted on following the scores. He says it was one of the best wickets they had played on and the boundary sizes did not help either, but adds that that is how the game goes sometimes. On staying effective and fit across formats, Ngidi shares that he has learned from the older guys to just keep bowling. He feels there is a lot of focus on gym work and conditioning, but believes it is the overs under the belt that matter the most.
A quick word from PBKS' young star - Cooper Connolly says he is looking forward to playing in Dharamsala and hopes to put on a show for the fans. Reflecting on the century he scored in the previous game, the youngster says he has taken the positives from the knock while also assessing what he could have done even better. Connolly believes that every innings starts from zero, and his focus remains on sticking to his processes and trusting his skills. He says he is thoroughly enjoying the challenge of facing world-class bowlers, while acknowledging that some pitches are great for batting and others offer more assistance to bowlers, something he welcomes as part of the contest. When asked by Alan Wilkins about when he might start bowling again, Cooper informs that he will not be taking any part with the ball in this tournament. Adds that bowling is something he added to his game around four or five years ago. Connolly also reveals that he initially bowled left-arm medium pace like his father before eventually switching to spin to ease the workload on his body.
PITCH REPORT - Danny Morrison mentions that there were thunderstorms overnight in Dharamsala, but the ground is now looking an absolute picture ahead of the contest. He also points out a slight imbalance in the square boundaries at 63 and 65 metres respectively, while it stretches out to 72 metres straight down the ground. Nick Knight feels it is a surface where he would love to get the pads on and have a hit. He notes that there is a nice, even covering of coarse grass on a hard pitch, and if there is any assistance for bowlers, it is likely to come with the hard new ball. Overall, though, he expects the ball to come nicely onto the bat. The average first innings score across the last five matches here stands at 209, while teams batting first have enjoyed greater success at the venue.
Pitch expectations and records - The overall head-to-head record between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals reads 18 wins to 17, marginally in favor of the Kings. And the recent history is just as closely fought. Since 2023, Punjab edge it 3-2, while at Dharamsala specifically, it’s a stalemate at 2-2. As for conditions, overcast skies were hovering over the ground through the afternoon, which typically aids the seamers and keeps the batters honest early on. But clearer, more pleasant weather is expected by match time, and when the clouds part, the pitch tends to open up nicely for batting. That said, the weather here can shift without much warning in the span of a few minutes, and the odd shower cannot be entirely ruled out. We hope for a full and competitive game of cricket. Toss and team updates coming up shortly. Stay tuned.
Team combinations and updates - The big news from the Punjab camp is the return of Afghan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, who has rejoined the squad. He could well come straight into the playing XI, with the struggling Bartlett the most likely one to make way. A like-for-like change in theory, but Omarzai brings considerably more firepower and batting flexibility to the side. Delhi, with the elimination sword hanging over them, are unlikely to tinker too much. Though there is an outside chance that the out-of-form Kuldeep Yadav finds himself on the bench, with the conditions here potentially prompting the bringing in of an extra seamer instead. But again, all these are just speculations.
Scenarios at the scenic venue - To put things into perspective of what weightage this game holds, let us take a quick sneak peek at the points table. Sunday offered two back-to-back humdingers and the results from those games have only intensified the competition. The top three teams are at 14 points. The teams placed fifth and sixth have 12 points. And sandwiched between them are the Punjab Kings in the fourth position with 13 points, right at the playoff knife-edge. Win this and their early-season dominance gets its reward. They go to the top of the table. The uncomfortable news? Lose this and the top four, which felt so secure, suddenly need protecting all over again. Delhi Capitals arrive here with no such luxury of perspective. A loss here and they are out of the playoff race, plain and simple. MI and LSG have already made their walk through the exit door. Delhi simply cannot afford to be next. But to stay alive, every game remaining is a must-win for them.
S19, E55 - The Indian summer has been scorchingly unforgiving. Ground after ground, city after city, the heat has been as relentless as the cricket itself. But today, IPL 2026 finds its most spectacular refuge. Welcome to Dharamsala, cradled in the lap of the Himalayas, where the Dhauladhar range watches over the HPCA Stadium like nature’s own grandstand. Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals meet here in Match 55. Two sides that have been feeling the heat in more ways than one lately, and now they must perform in the one place where the heat has finally let up.
... MATCH DAY ...
The hills are calling - Nestled at over 1400 metres above sea level in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamsala wears many identities at once. It is the home of the Dalai Lama, and a town where Buddhist monasteries sit quietly above the noise of the world. The upper reaches of the town, known as McLeod Ganj, carry a distinct character altogether. Prayer flags flutter along narrow lanes, monks in maroon robes move unhurried through the markets, and the mountains loom so close you feel you could reach out and touch the snow on the Dhauladhar peaks. There is a stillness here that few cities can offer, a sense that time slows down the moment you climb above the plains. The HPCA Stadium sits within this world like a quiet miracle. Perched on the edge of the hills, with the Dhauladhars rising behind the sightscreen on a clear afternoon, it is arguably the most picturesque cricket ground in the world. But Dharamsala is not here to offer postcards. IPL 2026 arrives in these hills for the first time this season with urgency in its boots. Punjab Kings host Delhi Capitals in Match 55, and with the top four race tightening every evening, neither side can afford to treat this as a scenic detour. The hills are calm. The cricket will not be. No room for error now - Absolutely. Both teams arrive wounded in Dharamsala. Punjab Kings had looked like a side written in a different ink to everyone else earlier this season. Six wins from their first seven games, table toppers for nearly half the tournament, a team that carried the swagger of genuine title contenders. But form in the IPL is fragile, and PBKS have since lost three on the bounce. The momentum that felt so assured has quietly slipped. They still sit third, but the hunting pack behind them is closing in with every passing evening, and the cushion is thinner than it looks. Such is the delicacy of their situation that one more defeat here could see them tumble out of the top four altogether. A slip-up they could just not afford to happen. As for the Delhi Capitals, it’s been a season to forget so far. They began with back-to-back wins, full of promise and early momentum, but that bright start now feels like a distant memory. Since those opening two victories, DC have not managed to string consecutive wins together even once. They are currently eighth on the points table, and every game from here is a must-win to keep their qualification hopes alive. Their remaining three games are against teams placed above them in the table, so it is not going to be an easy ride at all for the Capitals. Searching the lost spark - PBKS still boast one of the most fearsome batting units in the competition, but their two most influential men at the top have found it tough in recent games, and that has hurt the team more than anything else. Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya have been the heartbeat to set the tone in the Powerplay and give the middle order the platform to launch. But in the last three games, that platform has not materialised. Prabhsimran has managed just 77 runs in this stretch while Priyansh has scored only 32. The numbers reflect in the results too. Punjab have lost seven wickets in the Powerplay across those three defeats, with both openers falling inside the first six overs in two of them. There is, however, a reason for optimism. The last time this opening stand truly clicked was against the Delhi Capitals. The pair put on 126 together that evening, serving as the catalyst for what became the highest successful run chase in IPL history. Punjab will be hoping that facing the same opposition, in more familiar surroundings this time, brings out that version of their opening pair again. A glimmer of positivity - Not everything is doom and gloom for Punjab, though. The middle order has been churning out runs even through this bumpy patch, and that is something to hold onto. Marcus Stoinis has been in terrific touch, and Cooper Connolly has announced himself in style with a stunning century against SRH, even if it came on the wrong side of the result. There is runs and confidence in this middle order, and that counts for something. Shreyas Iyer has not quite fired at the strike rate he is known for in recent games, but he remains the heartbeat of this batting unit. His 71 off 36 balls against these very opponents earlier in the season is proof enough of what he can produce when the moment demands it. Bowling and fielding struggles - There is a famous cricketing adage. Catches win matches. PBKS, for all the dominance they have shown with the bat and even ball for that matter, have been equally poor with their fielding. They are currently among the teams with the lowest catching efficiency in this season, having shelled the simplest of catches. Even against SRH, they missed four, or maybe five chances, and when you do not convert those easy chances, there is a need for serious introspection. The bowling has shown cracks too. Powerplay returns of 79/1, 58/1 and 84/1 in their last three games tell a story of growing tensions. And at the centre of that concern is Arshdeep Singh. The spearhead has looked off colour both with the new ball and at the death, with his economy reading 10.42 in recent games, among the worst in this Punjab unit. A fit and firing Arshdeep is non-negotiable for this team. Right now, they need him to find himself, and quickly. What is going wrong with DC? ‘We will think about what plans we can make for the next year.’ These were Axar Patel's words after Delhi's previous game, and they cut through like a brutal summary of where this campaign stands. Though they are still not officially knocked out, that sword is hanging over them scarily. At a point in the season when every other team is locked in a fierce battle for the top four, the Capitals are searching for combinations, searching for momentum, searching for something to hold onto. A side still finding itself - At the centre of all their problems is batting inconsistency, and the previous game against KKR only widened the cracks that were already visible. Scroll back through their last four defeats and a pattern emerges. All of them have come while defending, including a stunning failure to protect 264 against these very opponents, the Punjab Kings, at home. Zoom into their last three games, and the picture gets grimmer. This is the same unit that chased down 226 against an in-form RR, so the firepower is there. But batting first, they have badly struggled. 75 all out against RCB. A middling 155 against CSK. A laboured 142 against KKR. Three totals that gave their bowlers nothing to work with. Beyond KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka, the middle order has looked fragile. Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh have offered the odd bright moment, but the overdependence on the top two has made every innings a precarious exercise. With Axar hinting at wholesale changes to test the bench, DC head into Dharamsala looking as uncertain about their best XI as they have all season. Guns, but not all loaded - DC have the names to make any batting unit uncomfortable. Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav in the same XI is as potent a bowling combination as any in this tournament on paper. But paper and reality have told different stories this season. Kuldeep and Natarajan have struggled not just to pick wickets but have leaked runs at an alarming rate. Axar has held his end up admirably, but with next to no support from his spin partner, the pressure on the skipper has only multiplied. The middle overs have become a problem area, with Kuldeep going for plenty and failing to provide the control and breakthroughs that DC desperately need. And at the death, Natarajan looked brittle. Team form (Last 5 completed IPL matches, recent first) PBKS - LLLWW | DC - LLWLL. What to expect? The HPCA Stadium features a fast, batting-friendly pitch that offers excellent pace, bounce, and carry, often resulting in high-scoring games. Situated at a high altitude, the surface assists pacers with early swing and movement, while small boundaries and fast outfield favour batters. Yet, of the 14 IPL matches played here, teams chasing have won only five times, with six of the last seven won by the side batting first. And despite the small dimensions and fast conditions, the 200-run mark has been breached just four times at this ground, suggesting that the bowlers have often got some assistance as well. But the scores have more often than not hovered between the 180-200 figure on average. Both teams would do well to note that putting runs on the board first has been the winning formula at Dharamsala far more often than not.
