Semi-final picture takes shape - That is a wrap on a day that carried plenty of anticipation heading into it. We began in Ahmedabad, where South Africa completed a dominant win over the West Indies, and with India's victory later in the evening, their qualification was confirmed. Up next, on Friday, 27th February, England take on New Zealand in Colombo. England have already qualified, but a win for the Kiwis will seal their place in the semi-finals and knock Pakistan out of contention. However, if New Zealand lose, Pakistan will remain in the race heading into their final Super 8 game against Sri Lanka on 28th February. The first ball will be bowled at 1.30 pm GMT. Need to be clinical with the ball - India's skipper, Suryakumar Yadav says they wanted to leave everything behind. Adds that they did not want to think much about what they did in the group stages or about the loss in the last game. Mentions that the video analyst showed them a slide where he showed what all the batters have done in the last year or so, and they executed the same in the field as well, which was heartening to see. Admits that they could have been clinical with the ball, but does not want to take anything from the Zimbabwean batters who took their time in the Powerplay and then batted really well throughout the game. Says that they will have to be courageous and take bold calls now. They will think about that once they get to Kolkata, but for now, they will use the day off.
Vows to finish on a high - The captain of Zimbabwe, Sikandar Raza begins by saying that they have a lot of positives to take from this match. Adds that in the previous match, they panicked while chasing, but the skipper feels like they were much more composed today. He further says that there was a lot of misexecution from a lot of the bowlers, and they could have done better in the first inning. Raza adds that it's the first World Cup for most of their players, but he reckons that they are making progress and they will do better in future. Hopes that they get a better result in the last game and give their best shot.
Time for a word with the captains...
India turned it on with the bat - India racked up 256, the second-highest team total in T20 World Cup history, with contributions flowing right through the top six. Abhishek Sharma broke his run of low scores with a half-century, well supported by Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Then came the Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya show to provide the final flourish. Hardik also brought up a half-century as India launched 17 sixes on their way to a daunting 256. With the ball, India were not quite at their sharpest. There were moments in the field where complacency appeared to creep in, and the intensity dipped at times. Varun Chakaravarthy's lack of impact with the ball over the last two games would be a mild concern for India, and they will want their talisman back at his most threatening ahead of the next outing.
Zimbabwe go down but not without a fight - The Chevrons fell well short on the night, and the silver lining on a tough day at the office was once again Brian Bennett, one of their shining lights of the tournament. Bennett stuck to his approach, played proper cricketing shots, and took on the likes of Varun Chakaravarthy and Jasprit Bumrah with confidence. Earlier, after opting to bowl first, the Zimbabwe quicks did not extract as much movement as their Indian counterparts and were inconsistent with their lines and lengths. Curiously, despite India's known struggle against off spin, Sikandar Raza held himself back and did not bring himself on as early as he perhaps could have. Once India got off the blocks, there was simply no stopping them.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Hardik Pandya is the recipient of the award for his unbeaten and impactful 23-ball 50-run knock. Pandya says that he is pretty happy with his batting effort. Adds that he had to reassess the conditions. Tells that he tried to hit a bit too hard early on, but realised that he could just time the ball. Mentions that they were all keeping an eye on the South Africa versus West Indies game, but once they started, the focus completely shifted to this game and what they needed to execute. Says that he is satisfied with his bowling, and God has gifted him the ability to swing it both ways to make the batters work. Ends by saying that he still has one over to bowl (as he only bowled 3 in the game), which he will do now.
India brush aside Zimbabwe - A thumping win for the defending champions, and with this victory, they set up a virtual quarterfinal with the West Indies on Sunday. As a result of this outcome in Chennai, South Africa are now through to the semis, and Zimbabwe are out of the race. The Chevrons came into the Super 8s brimming with confidence after topping their group and beating the likes of Australia and Sri Lanka, but found themselves batted out of the game in both games, first by West Indies and tonight by India.
