A fitting end to the ODI series, with the ebbs and flows of the format on full display. A night to remember for Michael Bracewell and his men, all smiles as they pose with the trophy for the cameras. Attention now turns to the more consequential of the two white-ball series, with a five-match T20I series up next. With the T20 World Cup coming up, this series presents an ideal opportunity for both teams to fine-tune their combinations and preparations. The captain of New Zealand, Michael Bracewell, shares that it is always a pleasure to play in India in front of such amazing crowds and against a quality Indian team. Mentions that you are always hopeful of playing good cricket, and they stuck to what worked as a team. Bracewell says that they always try to work their way up to take on some of the bigger teams. Tells that he is happy for Daryl Mitchell and he believes that this is the result of his hard work. Praises the debutants for stepping up and he feels the way they delivered speaks volumes about the depth in their ranks.

No surprises that Daryl Mitchell has been named the PLAYER OF THE MATCH as well as the PLAYER OF THE SERIES. Mitchell says that it's really nice to contribute towards the team and it is special to win here in India. Adds that they take pride in building partnerships, and the way Young and Phillips did with him was great. Tells that it is always nice to get stuck into moments in the game with your mates. Mentions that he just tries to be in the present, watch the ball and repeat and make some good decisions along the way. Says that Phillips is a mate, and it was awesome to see him get a 100. He has been out of the game for a while, but he is proud of how he has come back. Ends by saying that he just loves playing for his country, it took a while to get here but domestic cricket has helped him learn about his game a lot.

The captain of India, Shubman Gill says that the way they played after winning the first game was disappointing. Believes that there are areas that need improvement. Mentions that the way Harshit Rana batted at number 8 was a positive and the way pacers operated was good to see. Shares that keeping in mind where the next ODI World Cup is going to be held, they want to give opportunities to Nitish Kumar Reddy. Adds that they want to assess what combinations work for them and what kind of deliveries work for Reddy.

Jayden Lennox is in for a chat. Lennox says that he wouldn't say he found the Indian conditions easy. Adds that putting up winning performances against a star-studded side is very special, and it is incredible to win their first-ever ODI series here. Mentions that he does not overcomplicate his game, he has played on small grounds and takes pride in doing well at the death and creating pressure. Says that the aim for left-arm spinners in limited overs cricket is not be predictable and not let the batters get underneath or use their feet. Further adds that he thought the atmosphere here would make him more nervous, but he handled it well. Tells that they had a relatively inexperienced unit, but they have performed really well in pressure situations. Ends by crediting the New Zealand setup, who are operating and doing a great job.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, New Zealand were reduced to 5/2, losing both openers within the first two overs, and Will Young was unable to make his start count. The recovery was led by Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips, who put together a marathon 219-run partnership. The pair were able to make up for the dots that had built up earlier, largely due to the disciplined bowling from the hosts. Both batters went on to register centuries, with Mitchell notching up his career-best ODI score of 139. Both fell within 7 balls heading into the death overs, which allowed India to claw things back. However, Michael Bracewell and contributions from the lower order helped the Kiwis reach 337.

The problem for India was that on either side of those partnerships, there were no substantial stands of note, and it left Kohli fighting a lone battle for much of the chase. A word, too, for Jayden Lennox, who in just his second ODI stepped up admirably and assumed the role of lead spinner in the absence of Michael Bracewell, who was unable to bowl due to a calf issue. Kyle Jamieson asked all the tough questions in the first Powerplay, while Zakary Foulkes and Kristian Clarke, though not as effective early on, played their part later by breaking the two budding partnerships.

Chasing 338, India lost Rohit Sharma early, while Shubman Gill was undone by a ripper from Kyle Jamieson. New Zealand continued to make inroads with a couple of quick strikes, reducing India to 71/4. Virat Kohli then held the chase together, first with Nitish Kumar Reddy through an 88-run stand, and later with a 99-run partnership alongside Harshit Rana. The stand with Rana, in particular, brought the hosts right back into the contest, but once it was broken, Kohli was left with too much to do.

Another piece of cricketing history has been written by New Zealand in India. They arrived in 2024 carrying the burden of never having won a Test series in the country, and they ticked that box. The Kiwis returned to Indian shores, having never won an ODI series here on their previous 7 tours, and they have now conquered that frontier as well. What makes it even more special is that they have achieved this feat with an inexperienced group, missing several established ODI regulars, and with a number of players touring India for the first time.

OUT! KULDEEP YADAV IS RUN OUT! A brilliant piece of fielding, and Glenn Phillips has the final say in this game. Kristian Clarke lands this on a hard length and on off. Arshdeep Singh pushes it towards cover and sets off for the run. Phillips is quick to move to his right, picks it up, and without much of a backlift scores a direct hit at the batter's end in one motion. Kuldeep Yadav thinks he is in, and he turns back for the second run as the ball deflects away in the deep. However, it has been sent upstairs, and the replay shows that Kuldeep did not slide his bat inside in time. Phillips is ecstatic seeing this on the big screen, and every Kiwi player surrounds him to celebrate this historic win. NEW ZEALAND WIN BY 41 RUNS AND SEAL THE SERIES 2-1!

OUT! IN THE AIR....GONE! That is probably the game for New Zealand, and it is pin-drop silence here in Indore. Kristian Clarke goes fuller and on off. Virat Kohli tries to launch it down the ground, but his bat turns in his hands upon contact. He ends up mistiming it high in the air towards long off, where fittingly, it is Daryl Mitchell who settles under it and pouches it safely. It is disappointing for Kohli and India, as he walks back for a magnificent 124 off 108, but it won't be in a winning cause here. The crowd applauds him, but it is the Kiwis who are celebrating.

FOUR! TWO IN TWO! Short of a length and angling down the leg side. Virat Kohli knows that fine leg is up in the circle and helps it past that fielder for another boundary. 50 needed in 28 balls now.

FOUR! Excellent effort in the deep but goes in vain! Back of a length and on off, Virat Kohli heaves it away off the inside half of the bat as the ball races wide of deep mid-wicket. Glenn Phillips runs to his right and puts a big dive to stop the ball. However, the ball still rolls away, and Phillips tries to kick it away, but his shoulder touches the cushions while doing that. He signals a boundary. Fair play to him.

FOUR! Gets it away somehow! This is fractionally short, on off, Kuldeep tries the reverse scoop and gets some bat on it. The ball goes past the keeper's left arm and it races away.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Mohammed Siraj has been strangled down leg. Two in two for Zakary Foulkes. Full and sliding down leg, Siraj looks to play the glance but the ball grazes the edge and the keeper, Mitchell Hay gets low to his left to gobble it up. Siraj was not sure whether he nicked it but opted against the review after having a chat with Kohli. Foulkes is on a hat-trick.

Massive blow for India. Now, Mohammed Siraj walks out to bat.

OUT! CAUGHT! Zakary Foulkes breaks through. Not the best of balls from Foulkes, a full toss, just below the waist. Rana is deep in the crease for a heave across the line. He is late on the shot and spoons it in front of long on. Henry Nicholls comes charging in off the ropes and slides to take a fine catch under pressure. The 99-run stand is broken.

SIX! 21 runs off the over! Just the over India were looking for. Jamieson angles it into the right-hander, on a good length, on middle and leg. Rana charges down the track and clobbers it way over long on for a six.

A mix-up but not harm done! A searing yorker at the toes. Virat gets the front pad out of the way and jams his bat down on the ball. It rolls in the vacant square leg region and Kohli is keen for the second but Harshit is late to complete the first run. Virat is almost halfway down the track before he is sent back.

Jamieson nails the yorker this time, on off, Virat gets his bat down hurriedly and squeezes it out to the left of deep mid-wicket. The call is for two and Rana makes it to the bowling end, where the throw arrives.

SIX! Launched down the ground! Jamieson errs in length as he dishes out a low full toss, on off. Kohli does not miss out as he holds his shape and lofts it with a straight bat back over the bowler's head for a six.

Wide! Jamieson serves the slower bumper but this is way too high, around off, Kohli hops and flays at it but misses. Wide given for height.

Jamieson bends his back and digs it in short, on off, Harshit swings for the pull but gets more height than distance on it. It lands between deep square leg and deep mid-wicket for a single.

FOUR! Up and over! Jamieson pitches it up at the sticks with mid off inside the circle. Harshit clears the front leg and swings through the line. Not a clean connection but more than enough to clear the man at mid off.

Wide! Rana takes a step away from the stumps early and Clarke tries to keep it away from the batter's arc. Ends up going past the tramline. Wide given.

Pace off and into the surface, over off and middle. Kohli waits on it a bit before pulling it down to deep backward square leg for a run.

Goes full, does Clarke. Harshit knocks it between cover and mid off for a single.

FOUR! Absolutely hammered! Clarke bowls it on a back of a length, outside off. Fast hands from Rana, who gets the desired width and he slaps it through point for a four.

Wide! This slips just beyond the tramline, very full. Harshit throws his hands at it but misses.

Bangs it into the deck, over middle. Harshit arches back and looks to play the uppercut but misses. Not the first time Rana has missed out on this shot. Harshit and Kohli look towards the square leg umpire but they don't get the signal they wanted.

HUNDRED FOR VIRAT KOHLI! A knock of the highest order under a huge amount of pressure. Century number 54 for him in ODIs, and 7th against New Zealand. This is on a length and on middle, Kohli tucks with soft hands towards mid-wicket for one. He turns around for the second, but Foulkes is quick to run to his right to collect it and throws it at the bowler's end to keep it to one. Kohli soaks in all the applause, but he knows that the job here is not done.

DRINKS! India are on the verge of breaking another unwanted record here of not losing a single ODI series at home against New Zealand. However, as long as Virat Kohli is out there, they still have hopes, but he needs support from the other end as well. The Kiwis in the last few overs have done well to keep Kohli off strike, and this will put more and more pressure on him to get quick runs as the asking rate is going up too. It will be interesting to see how Kohli bats now, with the lower order, as he needs to face most of the balls from now on.

On Shubman Gill’s dismissal, Sunil Gavaskar said on air that he had heard Gill was advised to take his backlift from third man due to his struggles for runs before the series, but he dismissed that idea as complete rubbish. Gavaskar explained that such a backlift often creates a big gap between bat and pad, which was evident in Gill’s dismissal. He stressed that it is the mindset, not the technique, that needs to change, and praised Mitchell and Phillips for playing with a straighter bat and being rewarded for it in the first innings.
