CSK outplayed in their backyard - Two defeats in two games leave the Super Kings rooted to the bottom of the table, with plenty of introspection ahead. There were certainly positives in their batting approach tonight, but they will need to tighten up significantly with their bowling plans and raise their standards in the field as well. The challenge only elevates for them as they face the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, on Sunday, 5th March, at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). On his fearless batting approach and whether it’s been natural or shaped by the demands of the game, Arya says it has largely been his style from the beginning, adding that he plays in a way that ultimately benefits the team. On his approach of taking on the first ball and whether it carries too much risk, Arya explains that there is always some risk involved, but he backs his ability. Adds that it’s a long competition and while he’s pleased with the start, there’s still a long way to go. On his role in the side, he mentions that it’s about making the most of the final overs of the Powerplay if he gets in early, while also trying to control the innings before shifting gears. Speaking about the team environment, he says it hasn’t felt too different, with several Australian teammates helping him settle in, and adds that he’s looking forward to learning from them as the tournament progresses. On his bowling, he says he hopes to have the ball in hand soon and is eager to showcase his skills.
The captain of the Chennai Super Kings - Ruturaj Gaikwad feels that it was a really good score, given the boundary dimensions and the way the slower balls were gripping. Shares that since they had 3 seamers already, they felt that Rahul Chahar and Noor Ahmad would form a good pairing in the middle phase, which is why they brought in Chahar as the impact sub. The CSK captain feels that they couldn't really build the pressure with the ball. Adds that at one point, the required run rate climbed to 11, but they could not take it up further. Timing it sweetly and placing it with precision, he steadily took the game away from CSK with a series of elegant, authoritative strokes, anchoring the chase with poise. His swashbuckling 50 off just 29 helped the Punjab Kings to get close. However, a couple of wickets did fall coming into the climax, but the target set by the hosts was not adequate.
A bit of up and down in the middle phase - Prabhsimran Singh carried the intent into the middle overs, keeping the scoreboard ticking, but an unexpected run-out briefly stalled the charge. The pitch offered some grip, allowing the spinners to keep things quiet at times. However, CSK’s bowling plans didn’t quite come together, with the execution falling short, and their inability to strike regularly allowed the incoming batters time to settle.
Arya’s blitz sets the tone - Chasing a target in excess of 200, Priyansh Arya came out all guns blazing, tearing into the attack with a breathtaking burst. His 39 off just 11 balls laid a stunning platform for Punjab Kings. With no dew to aid the chase and just a hint of sideways movement on offer, PBKS racing to 68/1 at the end of the Powerplay firmly tilted the early momentum in their favour.
An improved batting display - It was a power-packed outing from CSK, batting-wise, and a complete contrast to their showing in Guwahati earlier in the week. The intent was there right from the Powerplay. Though Samson couldn’t quite find top gear, Ayush Mhatre lit up the innings with a knock full of fluency and fearlessness, steering CSK into a commanding position, which allowed Gaikwad to play his natural game in that 96-run alliance. Shivam Dube, too, took his time to find rhythm, but once he did, he shifted gears ominously towards the back end, ensuring the momentum never dipped. Yet, the real glue of the innings came in that crucial middle phase, where CSK was reduced from 110/1 to 130/4. Sarfaraz’s proactive cameo injected exactly the kind of impetus CSK needed to turn a good platform into a formidable launchpad. In the end, it all added up to a total north of 200 for the men in yellow.
The Kings from Punjab crush the Super Kings - A 200-plus run chase made to look absolutely easy to the eyes from the Punjab Kings. As per Ian Bishop on air, this is Punjab Kings' 9th successful 200-plus run chase, which is the most by any team in the history of the IPL. He also mentions that CSK have now lost six games in a row at a venue which, once upon a time, was their fortress. Two games in, and there are plenty of problems for the Super Kings already. In the first game, it was their batting that gave underwhelming returns. This time around, it was their bowling that was taken to the cleaners.
