Right then, that’s all from this low-scoring thriller, where West Indies make it 1-1 by winning the Super Over against Bangladesh and forcing a decider. The third and final ODI will take place on 23rd October, Thursday, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. The action kicks off at 7.30 am GMT, but as always, do join us a bit earlier for all the pre-match build-up and insights. Until then, take care and goodbye!
The victorious skipper of West Indies, Shai Hope, is also the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his crucial half-century. He says that it was a very good game and he is happy with the way his team pulled it back. Feels that they could have restricted Bangladesh to 160-170 but Rishad batted well, and that's how the game goes. Reckons that this wicket played slightly better than the first game. Further says that it was a tricky chase and it is important to keep wickets in hand. Hope takes the blame for the run out of Justin Greaves. Hopes that the batters can learn from this game.
The captain of Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz says that it was a new experience for them playing in a Super Over but would have loved to be on the winning side. Mentions that it was not easy to bat on this surface, but Rishad chipped in with crucial runs when others struggled. Shares that he did not have options for the final over but went with Saif Hassan as there was turn on this track. Believes that the game was of fine margins, where had they gotten a boundary in the Super Over the story could have been different.
Presentation Time...
In the Super Over, West Indies batted first and immediately found themselves under pressure, losing Sherfane Rutherford on the second ball to Mustafizur Rahman. However, Shai Hope and Brandon King took the total to six from five balls, and a streaky boundary pushed Bangladesh’s target to 11 to win. Akeal Hosein was given the ball, but he had a rocky start, conceding a wide followed by a No Ball, reducing the equation to 7 off 6 balls and making it seem comfortable for the hosts. Yet, the dismissal of Soumya Sarkar shifted the momentum, and once Hosein found his rhythm, he became very difficult to score off. The Super Over mirrored the tension of the main match, with 3 needed off the final ball, but Hosein held his nerve, conceding just one run to wrap up the game and level the series.
Bangladesh will be left with mixed feelings about how they defended this total. Nasum Ahmed struck early to set the tone, but a couple of partnerships in the middle overs allowed West Indies back into the game. Defending a low total always requires two to three solid stands to take the game away from you, and at times it felt like Rishad Hossain was carrying the team single-handedly. After his quickfire innings, he came back to pick up three crucial wickets and also took a brilliant catch in the field. Nasum finished with two wickets, Tanvir Islam chipped in with a couple, and Saif Hassan claimed one as well. However, Saif’s biggest contribution came in the final over, where he was tasked with defending four runs. Few would have given him a chance, but he held his nerve and almost pulled off a remarkable finish, if only Nurul Hasan had held onto that last catch, it could have made all the difference.
Earlier in the innings, Bangladesh managed to post a competitive total, thanks largely to Rishad Hossain’s blistering 39 off just 14 balls. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Soumya Sarkar made handy contributions as well, though neither could go on to make it big. West Indies, on the other hand, created history by becoming the first team ever to complete all 50 overs using only spinners. Gudakesh Motie bagged three wickets but proved slightly expensive, while Alick Athanaze was the standout performer, delivering a remarkable spell of 10 overs for just 14 runs and picking up two wickets. Akeal Hosein also played his part, claiming a couple to help keep the hosts in check.
Shai Hope brought up another fine half-century, maintaining his superb record against Bangladesh, and a few lusty blows from Akeal Hosein brought the equation down to 14 off 12, and then 5 off the final over. It should have been straightforward from there, but a couple of dot balls made things nervy again. King watched most of the drama unfold from the non-striker’s end, and when Akeal fell, three were needed off the last ball. Khary Pierre miscued one in the air, only for Nurul Hasan to put it down, taking the game to a Super Over!
Amid all the chaos, Shai Hope stood tall, holding one end together while wickets kept tumbling at the other. Unfazed by the situation, he stuck to his natural game - rotating the strike smartly and finding the odd boundaries to keep the chase alive. He finally found some support from Justin Greaves, as the pair added 40-odd valuable runs to take West Indies closer. However, a moment of brilliance in the field from Mehidy Hasan Miraz ended Greaves’ stay with a sharp run-out. With just two wickets left and over 30-odd runs still needed, it was always destined to be a tense finish.
Let's just recap a bit on how we got here! Despite losing Brandon King in the very first over of the chase, West Indies managed a steady start with a 51-run partnership between Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty. Scoring wasn’t easy on this surface, but Athanaze took the initiative to keep the scoreboard ticking, while Carty played the anchor’s role. After Athanaze’s dismissal, Carty stitched together another important stand with debutant Ackeem Auguste, who showed good temperament and skill during his brief stay. However, just when things seemed under control, the familiar middle-order collapse struck again, this time tumbling from 90/3 to 133/7, much like the opening game.
What a thriller we’ve had in Dhaka! West Indies have just about scraped through to the finish line, and the expression on Darren Sammy’s face in the dugout says it all - more relief than celebration. It really shouldn’t have come down this close, but full marks to Akeal Hosein, who kept his composure despite a couple of nervy moments and managed to defend 10 runs in the Super Over, sealing a dramatic one-run win for the Windies.

Redemption for Akeal Hosein! He could not take the team over the line during the regulation time but he has done the job with the ball in the Super Over. A floater from over the wicket by Akeal, on a nagging length, outside off. Saif shuffles across and has a big swipe across the line. Gets a top edge that balloons and bounces towards short third. Gudakesh Motie reads the spin and moves to his left to collect the ball. Lobs it towards the keeper and a single is all Bangladesh can get. West Indies win the game in the Super Over and draw level in the series!

Wide! Oh, dear! The equation comes down to 3 needed off 1 and another Super Over is very much a possibility. Short and turning away, Saif walks across his stumps but lets it be. The ball spins beyond the tramline for a wide.

Leg bye! Akeal Hosein gets away with one here! Another half-tracker from Hosein, turning into the pads. Najmul Hossain Shanto swivels for the pull but the ball does not rise at all. Scoots through to beat Shanto on the pull. The ball clips the front pad and deflects behind off the gloves of the keeper for a leg bye. 4 required off the final ball.
Najmul Hossain Shanto comes out to the middle now.

OUT! CAUGHT! Soumya Sarkar holes out and a hush falls over the crowd! Not the best of balls from Hosein but he will take it. A half-tracker, turning in, on middle and leg. Sarkar swings across for the pull but the ball comes on slower than he expected. Gets it only as far as deep backward square leg, where Gudakesh Motie takes it around his knees. Pressure on Bangladesh with 5 needed off 2.
Another meeting. West Indies are taking their time to change the field here for the left-hander. They are going with 4 deep fielders on the leg side and only one on the off side.

Short again and another one from Akeal that goes across the right-hander, Saif hangs back and slaps it to deep cover for one. 5 needed off 3 for Bangladesh.

A valuable dot! Stays over the wicket to the right-hander, short and it turns away from the right-hander. Saif Hassan stays leg side of the ball and goes hard on the cut. Gets a bottom edge that goes on the bounce towards the keeper.

Floated up, on middle. Sarkar gets down on a knee and mows it to deep mid-wicket for a single. 6 needed off 5 for Bangladesh.
A mini conference between Akeal Hosein, Roston Chase, and Shai Hope. They want to get the field right here.

NO BALL! Oh, dear! Can you believe it? The last thing you need as a bowling side in a Super Over. Hosein has overstepped. Tossed up, on middle, Soumya Sarkar slogs it to the right of deep mid-wicket. The fielder in the deep gets around and fumbles while picking the ball up but the second run was always on. 4 runs and no legal ball so far.

Wide! Hosein starts from over the wicket and goes full, on middle and leg. Soumya Sarkar takes a step across the stumps and swings across but the ball turns down leg.
