Zimbabwe go 1-0 up - There was never any doubt about the quality of Zimbabwe's bowling stocks at home. They gave very little away and when it came to landing the killer blow they did not fail at that. Unlike Bangladesh, who reduced Zimbabwe to 70 for 8 and still let momentum slip through, allowing that partnership between Ngarava and Newman to develop. Surely this defeat will sting Bangladesh a lot, but both sides will have plenty to reflect on when it comes to the way they approach this pitch with the bat in the remaining two matches. The 2nd ODI will be played on Thursday, 9th July 2026 and the first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 7.30 am GMT. Zimbabwe will aim to seal the series then and there and will come inspired by this famous win, whereas Bangladesh will have to work really hard to find the equaliser. The victorious captain of Zimbabwe - Richard Ngarava says he is really pleased with the way they bowled. On the belief within the camp while defending a modest total, Richard shares that the discussion in the dressing room centred on the idea that Zimbabweans are capable of fighting their way through any situation and that belief carried them through. On defending 141, he says he confidently believed in the team knowing who they are, adding that they have often spoken about fighting until the very end and that is exactly what played out on the day. About his ninth wicket partnership with Nyamhuri, he details that the plan was to keep things simple by watching the ball closely, playing according to what it was doing and letting the ball dictate the shot. On leading the side to victory, he calls it a great feeling, especially with a few new players having come into the side, and he hopes starting the ODI series with a win can set the tone for what follows. On the support from the fans, he says he is delighted to have put smiles on their faces, not just for himself but for the whole team. Adds that seeing the crowd rallying behind them felt special and refers to them as the side's 12th man.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - NEWMAN NYAMHURI receives the award for his outstanding all-around display. He scored a precious 33 (51) and also picked up a couple of crucial wickets. Nyamhuri says that he is very happy to have done the job for the team. Mentions that their mindset was to put up a fight and mentions that the captain gave him good encouragement. End by saying that the wicket was very seamer-friendly.
The captain of Bangladesh - Mehidy Hasan Miraz reflects on the defeat. On Bangladesh's bowling performance, Mehidy Hasan Miraz says the side bowled really well, with special praise for Nahid, whose six-wicket haul he calls exceptional. He notes that the partnership between Ngarava and Nyamhuri yielded crucial runs for Zimbabwe and admits a little disappointment with how the batting unit went about its business. Let's hear it from Brad Evans - He says that when you try to defend such a low total, you have to look for wickets, and when it comes off like this, it feels special. Feels that the opposition also bowled really well, and they were even fine with defending 120 runs at one point. Further mentions that they kept pumping themselves up and always knew there was a wicket or two right around the corner.
Rana on a hunt - It is winter time in Zimbabwe and the weather today carried a chill of its own but it was Nahid Rana who turned up the heat with a spell of express pace that scorched through the Zimbabwean innings. It all began with a run out involving Ben Curran and things unravelled quickly from there with wickets tumbling one after the other. Taskin struck the early blows before Rana took over and kept hammering away at the heart of the Zimbabwean batting. He walked away with career best figures of 6 for 21 in 10 overs including two maidens. 141 is all Zimbabwe could manage to post in the end. But had it not been for the fighting 63-run stand between Ngarava and Nyamhuri, the total would have looked a lot leaner. This was a pitch where batters needed to be watchful against the new ball and spend time at the crease as it eased out for batting later on. If the lower order managed to scrounge a few vital runs, the top order, which looked in a hurry from the outset, will feel they could have added a lot more given how the surface only got easier to bat on as the innings wore on.
Slashing and throwing - That's what the Bangladeshi batters repeatedly did, never learning from their mistakes. Zimbabwe needed an inspiring Powerplay to put any sort of pressure on the tourists to defend a paltry score. And the likes of Ngarava and Muzarabani got the new ball talking, which made the Bangladeshi top order dance on its tune. Within a blink, they were 17/3 with the top three blown away, playing rash shots. Bangladesh made heavy weather of the chase but Hridoy and Nurul dropped anchor and showed good character, absorbing the pressure to forge a responsible 49-run alliance. But, a brainfade moment to take the attack on splashed water on all that hard work and doused the momentum they had built and from there the innings simply came crashing down. And just like that, 66/3 became 99/8, eventually getting bundled on 116.
Patience pays, impatience punishes - There is a saying that one should never underestimate the power of patience in life and this game offered a perfect lesson in exactly that. Bangladesh seemed to forget that basic virtue altogether. Time and again, the shot selection from the Bangladeshi batters raised eyebrows with players looking to force the issue on a pitch that demanded restraint rather than adventure. Loose strokes against a testing line and length undid the good work built by the bowlers earlier in the day and turned a defendable total into a match-winning one for the hosts. It was a stark reminder that even a modest score can look imposing when the chasing side fails to respect the occasion and the conditions on offer. But to be fair, batting from both sides was fairly erratic throughout the contest.
The Chevrons fly high - A famous, famous win for Zimbabwe. They had already wrapped up the One-off Test match in under three days and now with just 141 runs to defend they have pulled off a stunning victory in the ODI as well. Honestly, even with the kind of bounce and movement the surface offered it felt like Bangladesh would not make a mess out of chasing this down, but guess what, they have. However, this will feel more like a self-inflicted defeat for Bangladesh. But credit must go to the hosts for holding their nerve and grabbing every chance that came their way.
