In the middle overs, the change of pace worked well for them. He ends up saying that they had made it out successfully through a very tough Super 8 group, but they will look forward to extending their winning streak further and hope to come back to Ahmedabad for the final.
The captain of West Indies - Shai Hope says that on a wicket as good as this, you need to put runs on the board. Adds that they did not bat well in the Powerplay and lost too many wickets. Windies fall short on all fronts - West Indies simply did not have enough runs on the board, and they were below par with the ball as well. Against a side like South Africa, you have to grab the half-chances, but they failed to do so. No bowler truly threatened the Proteas, with the only wicket coming via Roston Chase. It was a disappointing outing overall, though this is just their first defeat of the campaign. They will be eager to regroup and bring their best in the next game.
Ngidi and Co. restrict Windies despite fightback - Earlier in the game, West Indies posted a competitive total, but at 83/7, they were in serious trouble before a record 89-run stand between Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd for the eighth wicket revived the innings. Even so, on a good surface, they seemed a few runs short. Lungi Ngidi was the standout with three wickets, while Kagiso Rabada and Corbin Bosch picked up two each. Keshav Maharaj was slightly expensive, but South Africa finished strongly, conceding just 13 runs in the final two overs.
Proteas cruise with authority - South Africa were never really troubled in the pursuit, with Aiden Markram setting the tone yet again. Quinton de Kock began cautiously, playing second fiddle, but once he settled in, he shifted gears effortlessly. The pair raced to 95 inside eight overs before de Kock fell for a brisk 47 off 24. That breakthrough did little to slow Markram, who continued smoothly to register his third half-century of the World Cup. Alongside Ryan Rickelton, who chipped in with a useful hand, he stitched together an unbroken 82-run stand to seal the chase with 23 balls remaining.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Aiden Markram wins the award for his match-winning 82* of 46 balls. He says that this side bowled pretty well, and with the bat, he highlights that the key was getting through the Powerplay strongly and then carrying that momentum into the middle overs. Markram acknowledges that the surface got better for batting in the second innings, pointing out that it was slightly tacky when the West Indies were batting. In that respect, he admits that he was a touch fortunate with the toss. With the bat, Markram explains that the focus is on getting into rhythm as quickly as possible. Ultimately, he says it is about locking in and doing what the team needs in the given situation.
The unbeaten run continues - Then there was one! With this convincing victory, South Africa remain the only unbeaten side in this World Cup. More importantly, they now have one foot firmly in the semi-finals. For West Indies, though, the road gets tougher from here.
