Okay then, 203 - it is for Bangladesh Women to win this game and knock Sri Lanka out of the tournament. But given how their batting has struggled throughout the tournament, it is not going to be an easy task against experienced bowlers like Udeshika Prabodhani and Inoka Ranaweera. Their focus will be on building partnerships and not throwing it away under pressure. Remember, the team that loses this contest will be officially eliminated from the World Cup. Momentum swung sharply back to Bangladesh as the spinners tightened their grip. Nilakshika Silva’s dismissal in the 32nd over sparked a downward spiral, with Sri Lanka tumbling from 174/4 to 202 all out, and squandering the gains from that 74-run stand for the fifth wicket. The bowling was simple and effective, targeting the stumps, while the batters gifted their wickets under pressure. Hasini Perera’s self-inflicted dismissal only deepened the slump. Shorna Akter tore through the middle order with three strikes, as Sri Lanka scraped together just 27 runs for four wickets between overs 31 and 40. And from there, it was just a matter of time for Bangladesh to wrap the tail. Though Udeshika Prabodhani and Malki Madara dragged it till the penultimate over, but with a draught of runs, that resistance was just not enough.
Sri Lanka could’ve easily been five down, but fortune favoured Perera as she was dropped not once, but twice, on 55 and 63. At the other end, Nilakshika’s experienced presence proved vital as the duo stitched together a solid recovery stand. They went back to the basics, rotating strike smartly, turning singles into twos, and sneaking in the odd boundary to keep the run rate from dipping and the dot-ball pressure in check. Bangladesh bowlers kept creating chances, but the fielders just couldn’t back them up. Overs 11-20 yielded only 37 runs and cost Sri Lanka three key wickets, but the Perera-Nilakshika alliance in the middle phase steadied things, adding 58 runs in the 21-30 over phase, without any wicket loss, balancing it up nicely.
Sri Lanka Women were off to a nightmare start, losing Vishmi Gunarathne off the very first ball. But Chamari Athapaththu and Hasini Perera made sure that was the only early blow. The pair wasted no time shifting gears, proactive running, smart intent, and every loose delivery duly punished. Bangladesh did find some swing early on, but Marufa couldn’t quite rein it in, and the spinners lacked the consistency to build any real pressure. With both batters settling in nicely, Sri Lanka cruised through the Powerplay at a strong 64/1. But after that, the run out of Harshitha Samarawickrama just opened the gates and Sri Lanka Women crumbled from 72/1 to 100/4 in quick succession.
A very weird kind of an innings for Sri Lanka, but Bangladesh would be the happier of the two sides walking back into the sheds. Not only they prevented the Lankans from batting the full quota of overs, but have restricted them to a significantly below-par total. At 174/4, Sri Lanka Women were eyeing a total in the range of 250-260 or even more with Nilakshika Silva and Hasini Perera batting so well in the middle phase, but they just couldn't consolidate after Silva's departure and added just 28 runs after that. Overall, Sri Lanka Women's batting frailties again got exposed as only three batters could cross the double digits while the rest's scores honestly look like a telephonic number.
