UPDATE - 9.50 pm IST (4.20 pm GMT) - Nothing new as Eden Gardens continues to be under covers. The rain is stubbornly hammering down and we worry it's not looking better right now.
Should Narine open for KKR? A question worth asking out loud as we wait for the rain to relent. Narine is KKR's second-highest run-scorer as an opener in IPL history, behind only Gautam Gambhir. His strike rate jumps from 137 lower down to 167 as an opener, and three Powerplay fifties in IPL cricket put him joint-third among all openers. The numbers indeed build a compelling case. The broader picture is where it gets interesting. Skipper Rahane is most effective at the top of the order, where his game is built around using the field restrictions. Allen, meanwhile, is a natural opener whose power at the start of an innings is well established. Four openers, two spots. That is the kind of depth most franchises would envy. Narine, Rahane, Allen, and Tim Seifert, as well, all carry genuine claims to open, with each bringing a different flavour. How KKR choose to arrange that puzzle could be one of the more fascinating selection conversations of their season.
UPDATE - 9.31 pm IST (4.01 pm GMT) - No signs of respite as yet from Kolkata. Although the intensity might have gone down, but it is still a very steady downpour from the live updates we are getting. We are also hearing that the cut-off time for a 5-over-per-side game is 11.14 pm IST (5.44 pm GMT). Deja vu with an unwelcome twist. The fixture between these two very teams was washed out last year, too, in Kolkata. Though that time, Punjab Kings at least got a full innings in, posting 201 before the heavens had the final say. Tonight, we may not even get that luxury, it seems.
UPDATE - 9.14 pm IST (3.44 pm GMT) - Here's Kevin Pietersen with a live report from the ground. He says the ground looks like an ice rink right now with the white sheet spread all across, and it's bucketing down with no signs of slowing up. Concerningly, he further adds that the worst is yet to come. That says everything about where things stand right now. Also, the overs have started to get trimmed now.
UPDATE - 9 pm IST (3.30 pm GMT) - Nope. The rain hasn't stopped. Word coming in that the rain is actually at its heaviest since the stoppage began. And with over an hour already gone, the buffer time has been swallowed up. Which also means, we will start to lose overs soon. A friend living a few kilometres away from the ground updates that strong winds are blowing across now. Not trying to be pessimistic, but this looks like a looooong delay.
UPDATE - 8.48 pm IST (3.18 pm GMT) - It's really coming down now at Eden Gardens, and the ground remains completely covered. The scheduled inspection hasn't been possible with the umpires unable to venture out in these conditions, so the delay continues with no clear timeline for the next update.
UPDATE - 8.33 pm IST (3.03 pm GMT) - It continues to rain steadily in Kolkata, with the entire ground still firmly under covers and no immediate signs of play resuming. The conditions haven't improved enough just yet, but there is a bit of clarity from the middle - an inspection has been scheduled for 8.45 pm IST (3.15 GMT). For now, it’s a waiting game, with hopes that the rain eases off in time to allow the umpires a proper look at the playing conditions.
UPDATE - 8.20 pm IST (2.50 pm GMT) - Scrap the previous update! While removing the covers, the drizzle has returned, and all the covers are coming back on again. It seems like we are in for a stop-start night, with the forecast also looking a bit gloomy.
UPDATE - 8.12 pm IST (2.42 pm GMT) - Good news, folks! The covers are coming off now. The ground staff are peeling them off one by one, but are keeping the main cover for now. It looks like we are not far from resumption.
UPDATE - 8.04 pm IST (2.34 pm GMT) - It is still drizzling, but the positive signs from the visuals are that there aren't many umbrellas up and the spectators aren't rushing for cover. Hopefully, it’s just a passing shower, and we can get going again soon. Also, Deep Dasgupta mentions on air that there's an extension of up to an hour before we start losing overs, so plenty of time still in hand.
UPDATE - 7.49 pm IST (2.19 pm GMT) - Uh...ohh! The drizzle has just gotten a bit heavier, and the umpires have called in for the covers. The good thing about this ground is that the whole ground will be covered, so whenever the rain stops, it won't take long for us to get going.

Errors in plenty, bonus runs for KKR! 5 in total. Length on middle and off, Raghuvanshi eases it calmly to mid off and rushes across for a single. Shreyas fires a throw at the bowler's end, but misses, and the backing up is nowhere near good enough. Jansen slides to stop it, but only succeeds in parrying it past fine leg. Shashank Singh sprints after it but fails to stop the ball as it squirrels through the practice pitches and kisses the ropes. Four completely free runs, and KKR won't mind that.

जेवियर बार्टलेट To कैमरन ग्रीन OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Xavier Bartlett with the double whammy and gets his Aussie counterpart this time. He lands this on a hard length and in that channel outside off, shaping it away again. Cameron Green steps across a bit and looks to push it away, but his feet go nowhere. He just goes through with his hands and gets a thin outside edge behind, where Prabhsimran Singh makes no mistake. Another failure for Cameron Green. Worst possible start for KKR, and their decision to bat first on a pitch with lively grass could be the talking point now.

FOUR! It's all edgy right now! Xavier Bartlett goes fuller and just around off. Cameron Green strides out and looks for the drive on the up. Gets a thick outside edge that flies past Vijaykumar Vyshak at short third for a boundary.
Finn Allen falls in the Powerplay once again. Cameron Green walks out to bat at number 3.

जेवियर बार्टलेट To फिन ऐलेन OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Bartlett gets the reward for his consistency in this over. Shaping away from the fourth stump, Allen stays leg side and throws his hands at it without moving his feet. The outside edge comes easy, and Prabhsimran gobbles it up behind the stumps. KKR are 12/1 as the dangerous Allen departs cheaply.

Oh, absolute chaos out in the middle! Far outside off, full in length. Allen sees fine leg in the ring and shuffles across to lap it over the inner ring, but gets a bit of an edge. The ball lobs and lands in front of the charging keeper. Seeing Allen marginally out of the crease, Prabhsimran Singh collects the ball and fires at the stumps, only to cannon the throw straight to Xavier Bartlett. Comedy of errors in the middle.

Nearly found the edge! Begins with a beautiful outswing, full and outside off. Allen tries to crash it over the bowler's head, but gets beaten all ends up. Lovely bounce on this as well.
A decent start for KKR, but there is some swing available for the pacers. Xavier Bartlett will share the new ball.

A slight appeal for LBW, but not given! Arshdeep swings back in from middle to leg, on a fuller length. Ajinkya Rahane flicks through backward square leg. Nehal Wadhera from deep square leg rushes across and cuts it off. Single to get off the mark for the KKR captain.
All in readiness in the 'City of Joy'! Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen rings the iconic bell at the Eden Gardens to mark the start of proceedings here. The two umpires walk out to the middle, followed by the Punjab Kings players who spread out and take their respective field positions. Ajinkya Rahane and Finn Allen are the two openers for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Arshdeep Singh has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play..
Big miss for the hosts - The absence of Narine and Chakaravarthy is a significant setback for KKR, leaving them short on experience, control and variation in the spin department, with only Anukul Roy as the frontline spinner. PBKS, meanwhile, have stayed loyal to their winning combination, and understandably so. When everything is falling into place and the balance feels right, there is little reason to disrupt that rhythm.
Impact substitute options for PBKS - Suryansh Shedge, Vishnu Vinod, Praveen Dubey, Priyansh Arya and Harpreet Brar.
Punjab Kings (Unchanged Playing XI) - Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (C), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal.
Impact substitute options for KKR - Manish Pandey, Tejasvi Singh, Rahul Tripathi, Saurabh Dubey and Blessing Muzarabani.
Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI) - Ajinkya Rahane (C), Finn Allen, Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi (WK), Rovman Powell (In for Sunil Narine), Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Anukul Roy, Navdeep Saini (On debut for KKR and In for Varun Chakaravarthy), Vaibhav Arora and Kartik Tyagi.
The skipper of Punjab Kings - Shreyas Iyer says he is happy with the toss result as they were looking to bowl first. On the chemistry between him and Ponting, Iyer says it has blossomed from when they were in the Delhi Capitals together and calls him an inspiration. Adds that working beside him is a phenomenal feeling. Further adds that he (Ponting) brings a plethora of ideas to the table and calls it a blessing in disguise. Informs that they are going with the same XI for this game.
The captain of Kolkata Knight Riders - Ajinkya Rahane says that it looks like a good wicket but a little bit on the drier side and they want to put the runs on the board. Adds that it is all about having the belief, the preparation has been great and it is about winning the small moments. Rahane informs that they have been forced to make a couple of changes. Varun Chakaravarthy got injured while taking the catch in the last game, and Navdeep Saini replaces him. Also, Sunil Narine is sick, and Rovman Powell comes in for him.
TOSS - It is time for the coin flip in Kolkata. Both captains - Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer are in readiness with the ever lively Danny Morrison to lead the proceedings. Rahane will give it a flick and Shreyas calls Tails. It lands as Heads. KKR ELECT TO BAT FIRST.
UPDATE - A big update from the KKR camp as Navdeep Saini has received the cap in the team huddle. He is all set to make it in the XI tonight. But will be interesting to see who makes way for him.
Who have we next? KKR's towering quick, Blessing Muzarabani, it is. Blessing says that it has been a good experience so far, a bit challenging to get used to the conditions, but he is enjoying it. Mentions that he is still trying to figure out the right lengths to bowl. Details that in the last game, the conditions were a bit slower, so he used that and got the wickets. Shares that the likes of DJ Bravo and Russell are constantly in his ears and he is trying to use that knowledge and be a complete cricketer. Ends by saying that every wicket is a big one here, and he aims to just give his best and contribute to the team.
The coach speaks - The Head Coach of Punjab Kings, Ricky Ponting, on being asked about the good start, says that it has been a good and solid beginning for the team. He admits that their opening game at their home ground in Mullanpur was not ideal, as there was some uncertainty around the nature of the wicket, which made preparation difficult. He adds that the game in Chennai was a much more clinical performance, with an excellent pitch and a very quick outfield aiding stroke play. He expresses satisfaction with the way the team chased down 210 with quite a few balls to spare, highlighting that contributions from multiple batters made it a very pleasing win. On being asked about his conversations with Cooper Connolly leading up to this year’s IPL, Ponting shares that Connolly has batted in several positions for both Australia and the Perth Scorchers. He notes that Connolly began his career in the middle order during his early days in the BBL, but underlines the importance of having a player who can take on the backend of the Powerplay. He references how Josh Inglis fulfilled a similar role last season by attacking in the latter half of the Powerplay and carrying momentum into the middle overs. He further explains that this approach allows Shreyas to settle into the middle phase, where he is most effective. Ponting describes him as one of the best players of spin and also points to his performance against CSK as evidence of that. Speaking about Connolly, Ponting says he believes the youngster is a star in the making. He adds that while Connolly is still finding his feet in the IPL, he has looked completely at home in the two games he has played so far. On hoping to get to 250, he says the game is trending that way. Adds with the Impact Player rule, good wickets, short boundaries and quick outfields, anything is possible on Indian pitches. He recalls coaching a game against Sunrisers where they posted 125 in the powerplay alone, and says the sport is heading exactly in that direction.
PITCH REPORT - Daren Ganga is pitchside. He says that there are a few clouds above and the ground is fully covered, but hopes for a timely start as there is no rain at the moment. Adds that the square boundaries are 64 and 65 meters, while the straight hit is 74 meters. Kevin Pietersen joins him and says that there is live green grass on the surface. He also points out a few bare patches, but doesn't expect it to affect much. Mentions that it is a high-scoring ground, it used to spin a lot a few years back but not anymore. Ganga ends by saying that teams batting first won the majority of the games last season, but with the weather around you might want to chase, and reckons bat will dominate ball again.
Weather update - There's a bit of rain in the forecast in Kolkata, but pleasingly, live visuals show that it is dry right now. Let's hope rain stays away and we get a full game of cricket in the City of Joy. Fingers crossed. Toss and teams coming up next very shortly. Stay tuned.
Spin to win in Kolkata? Three of T20 cricket's finest spinners share the same ground tonight, and the battle within the battle is Narine vs Chahal. Narine is the hardest spinner to score off in IPL history among those with 100-plus wickets, conceding at just 6.8 an over. Chahal is the leading middle-overs wicket-taker across all IPL seasons and has 33 KKR scalps to his name at a strike rate of 15.6. He knows this opposition well. Varun Chakaravarthy adds another dimension entirely. The fastest spinner to 100 IPL wickets, Varun has been a handful at Eden Gardens since 2020, bowling at a strike rate of 17.3 with an economy of 8.7. And with Narine holding the record for most wickets against Punjab in IPL history, 36 and counting, the spin plot thickens further.
Kings' 'landing' punch - When the conversation turns to destructive opening pairs in the IPL, it begins and ends with the two P's. Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya have made a habit of putting opposition attacks to the sword from ball one. More so, Cooper Connolly and Shreyas Iyer have each contributed a fifty, playing match-winning hands in their own distinctive ways. That kind of firepower in the top four gives Punjab a huge flexibility, and with serious hitting ability down the order, there are very few soft targets in this lineup. Away from the spotlight, one name has been quietly doing the heavy lifting. Vijaykumar Vyshak has not made many headlines, but the numbers are hard to ignore. With the likes of Chahal, Jansen and Arshdeep as the senior pros of the attack, Vyshak has been Punjab's silent assassin with the ball in middle and death phases.
The Knights look for a reset - KKR finished eighth last season and came into 2026 with a revamped batting unit built to dominate. So far, it hasn’t fired. The top order has been a bit inconsistent at best, Cameron Green is yet to justify his big price tag with the bat, and beyond Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh, the contributions have been thin on the ground. The bowling has been equally troubling. They have conceded over 220 in both games, leaking 80-plus runs twice in the Powerplays. The part that should worry KKR fans most is that Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine, one of the most destructive spin partnerships in T20 cricket, have looked a shadow of themselves. At Eden, in front of their own crowd, something needs to change.
The Eden test - Fresh week brings new hopes and excitement aplenty. And we are at one of the most historic addresses of cricket, the Eden Gardens, where Kolkata Knight Riders host Punjab Kings in Match 12. The starts couldn’t have been more contrasting. Punjab Kings have won two from two, and they have done so in a commanding way, chasing down big totals both times without much fuss. The confidence in their camp is sky-high after that stunning 210 pursuit against CSK, and they arrive in Kolkata with a spring in their step. KKR’s dressing room tells a very different story. This is the first time since 2012, the year they won their maiden IPL title, that they have lost both opening games. The all-time head-to-head still heavily favours the Knights at 21-13, but the recent record stings. Since 2023, Punjab lead 3-1. History is all well and good. Right now, form is king.
... MATCH DAY ...
Echoes of chaos at Eden - There are games, and then there are KKR vs PBKS games, where logic often takes a backseat. This rivalry has produced two of the most outrageous results in IPL history - Punjab Kings defending just 111, the lowest ever and then chasing down 262 in just 18.4 overs in Kolkata in 2024. That night, Shreyas Iyer was leading KKR, the same captain who would go on to lift the title, but is now on the other side. Add to that his 481 runs in 16 games against KKR, and suddenly, the narrative writes itself. KKR's questions to answer - Kolkata Knight Riders' season has teased brilliance without delivering results. They've shown they can pile on the runs, but their inability to control games has hurt them. Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been the standout, with back-to-back fifties, though two run-outs in the last game exposed lapses in communication. Finn Allen has been electric at the top, striking at 270.8, but KKR will want more time from him at the crease. Ajinkya Rahane's contrasting starts, fluent in one, struggling in the next, highlight their inconsistency, especially with his strike rate dipping after the Powerplay. Rinku Singh has looked in good touch but is yet to convert starts into a match-defining innings. Decisions, balance and the bowling puzzle - Their bigger headache, though, lies with their bowling and combinations. Do they bring in Rovman Powell for added firepower and risk leaving out Blessing Muzarabani, who picked up a four-fer? Cameron Green, their big-money signing, is yet to make an impact and could be key if he starts contributing with the ball. Varun Chakaravarthy's dip in form since the second half of the T20 World Cup has added pressure on Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy to hold the middle overs together. Kartik Tyagi's raw pace, consistently above 145 kph, has impressed, but inconsistency from the pacers has cost them in both games. Right now, KKR look like a side still searching for the right balance. PBKS riding the wave - Punjab Kings, in contrast, arrive with clarity and momentum. Their Aussie core - Stoinis, Cooper Connolly, and Bartlett has added structure, while Marco Jansen brings that extra edge with both ball and bat. Connolly has already stamped his authority with a match-winning 73 off 44, while Prabhsimran Singh has provided solid starts. Then came Priyansh Arya's stunning 39 off 11 against CSK, a reminder of the depth and fearlessness in this lineup. Add to that Shreyas Iyer's familiarity with KKR and his strong record against them, and PBKS suddenly look like a side with both belief and firepower. Match-ups that could decide it - If there's one battle that could tilt the game, it’s Yuzvendra Chahal vs KKR. With 33 wickets against them, including a hat-trick, he has historically troubled this lineup. On the other hand, KKR will rely heavily on their experienced core Allen, Narine, and Rinku to step up in crunch moments. Vijaykumar Vyshak's 5 wickets in two games have been a big positive for PBKS, but they will expect more from Arshdeep Singh and Xavier Bartlett to complement that effort, especially at the death. Team form (Last 5 completed games, recent first) - KKR - LLLLW | PBKS - WWLWL. Expect the unexpected - Eden Gardens has turned into a run-scoring haven, with 190 often just par and 200-plus totals becoming the norm, but as this rivalry proves, no number is ever safe here. KKR come in desperate to fix their flaws, while PBKS ride a wave of confidence, setting the stage for another classic where momentum can flip in an instant, and the unexpected feels almost inevitable.
