OUT! CAUGHT EASILY! The procession continues for Japan. Dishes out on a fuller length, on middle, Erika Toguchi-Quinn clears the front leg and tries to power it over mid on, but gets no timing on it whatsoever. Mishits it off the toe end and Shafali Verma at mid on, settles under it for a straightforward catch. Japan Women are 56/9 as Charani has her fourth wicket.

एन चरणी To अकारी निशिमुरा OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! Sree gets her third wicket. She keeps it full in length and the ball spins in with a bit of bounce. Akari Nishimura is neither fully on the front foot nor she is on the back foot, and tries to clip it across to the leg side. Only manages a thick leading edge, and the ball spoons up and is taken easily by Bharti Fulmali at short mid-wicket. Japan Women are 56/8.

OUT! AHILYA CHANDEL IS RUN OUT! A complete communication lapse between the batters. On a good length, outside off, Nishimura walks out of the crease and sweeps it towards Nandani at square leg. She slips while charging for the single, and Chandel is already halfway through. Ahilya gives up, and that gives Nandani Sharma enough time to pick and throw to the batting end. Ghosh does the rest. DRINKS BREAK! India find themselves in control of the proceedings, but they have not been quite as sharp as they would have liked in the field. After the pacers struggled to find their lines and lengths, the spinners have brought discipline to the attack and made life difficult for the Japanese batters. Only 6 runs have come in the 5 overs since the end of the Powerplay, and that tells you just how tough Japan have found scoring. It is all part of the learning curve for them, but they will need to find a way to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard moving. Shafali Verma to bowl after the break.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! One brings two, they say. Sree lands it on a good length and turns away from the batter, outside off. Mai Yanagida has a loose poke at it, playing away from her body and barely moving her feet. Gets a faint outside edge and Richa Ghosh grabs it cleanly behind the stumps. FOUR! Up and over! A confident shot from Haruna Iwasaki, and that will help her feel a lot better. Flighted up by Charani, a bit too full, on off. Haruna puts her head down, gets under the ball and pumps it over the mid on fielder. 9 runs off Charani's first over.

FOUR! Edged away. That's the first boundary of the contest, much to the delight of the crowd and the Japanese dugout. Floated up by Charani, on a length, outside off. Stafford is not to the pitch of the ball and pushes away from her body. The ball takes an outside edge and stays away from the reach of the slip fielder. The backward point fielder gives chase, but the ball wins the race.

4 doubles in 12 runs from these two. Iwasaki and Stafford have been proactive with their running between the wickets which is very impressive to see. And spin is introduced with Sree Charani replacing Kranti Gaud.

Another slower one by Sharma, full and around off. Haruna swings through the line and even though she does not quite get hold of it, she clears the back-tracking Harmanpreet Kaur at mid off. The long on fielder gets around and mops it up but she cannot prevent the batters from taking the second run. Stafford puts in a dive at the bowling end to make her ground safely.
The on-field umpire is having a bit of a chat with the two Japanese openers. Not sure what it is about. Also, the physio rushes out to check on Iwasaki. Looks like she overstretched on the dive and needs some treatment. All good to continue now.

Good awareness shown by the two batters. It is the back-of-the-hand slower one, on a good length, on middle and leg. Iwasaki is undone by the slowness of the delivery and is beaten on the flick. The batters pick up a leg bye as the ball drops beside the strip on the off side. Richa Ghosh gets to the ball and has a shy at the bowling end but misses. Haruna was gone had the throw hit. The ball dribbles down to long on and the batters sneak in the second run on the overthrow. Richa Ghosh and Nandani Sharma get into an argument as Ghosh wanted the bowler to get behind the stumps to collect the throw.

Done with all the pre-match rituals. Kimigayo and Jana Gana Mana are given their due as well. It's now time to get this historic match underway at Nisshin. The two umpires have made their way out and the Indian players spring out to take their fielding positions. Haruna Iwasaki and Ayaka Kato Stafford are the two Japanese openers. Kranti Gaud has the new ball and is raring to go. Iwasaki is on strike. Here we go...
We are just a few minutes away from the first ball, but before that, both teams have lined up for their respective national anthems. It will be Japan's first, followed by India's.
In conversation with Richa Ghosh (Translated from Hindi) - Richa says it feels great to be playing in Japan for the first time. On recovery, she says the team focused on what needed to be done and is now ready to go. She adds that confidence is sky-high after their Asia Cup triumph, and the team will work hard to carry that momentum into the Asian Games. On the conditions in Nisshin, Ghosh highlights that there was some rain around, so they have planned accordingly and are prepared to adapt. She stresses the importance of keeping things simple, adding that the team is not dwelling on winning gold at the previous Games and will start afresh. As for her batting mindset, Ghosh says she intends to keep it simple - hit the ball when it is in her zone and follow the 'see the ball, hit the ball' approach. When asked about exploring Japan, Ghosh says she has not had much time yet, having arrived only a day or two ago, but plans to do so in the coming days. She adds that she is particularly keen to try ramen and sushi, her favourite, along with other famous local dishes.
Milestone approaching for Mandhana - The stylish Indian opener notched up a couple of milestones during the Asia Cup, and another one could be ticked off today, with Smriti closing in on Suzie Bates (4758 runs) for the most runs in Women's T20Is. Mandhana needs 8 more runs to overtake the Kiwi legend and become the leading run-scorer in the format.
India Women (Playing XI) - Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Richa Ghosh (WK), G Kamalini, Bharti Fulmali, Deepti Sharma, Kranti Gaud, Shreyanka Patil, Sree Charani and Nandani Sharma.
Japan Women (Playing XI) - Haruna Iwasaki, Erika Oda, Hinase Goto, Akari Nishimura (WK), Mai Yanagida (C), Ayaka Kato Stafford, Ahilya Chandel, Shimako Kato, Ayumi Fujikawa, Erika Toguchi-Quinn and Nonoha Yasumoto.
TOSS - Time for the coin to go up. The flip of the coin has landed in favour of Harmanpreet Kaur. India elect to BOWL first.
Moments away from the toss - The match referee is having a word with the two captains, and the Japanese skipper, Mai Yanagida, has a huge smile on her face. You can see just how much this historic occasion means to her and the rest of the Japanese side.
Earlier in the day - Sri Lanka brushed aside Malaysia to book their place in the semi-finals. Riding on an entertaining 63-run knock from Chamari Athapaththu, Sri Lanka posted 160 on the board before restricting Malaysia to just 74 in their 20 overs. The result sets up a repeat of the Asia Cup semi-final, with Sri Lanka set to face Pakistan for a place in the gold medal match. We could also have a repeat of the other semi-final, with India the overwhelming favourites to get past Japan and set up a meeting with Bangladesh.
India look to keep rolling - The Women in Blue are the defending gold medallists from the previous Asian Games and arrive here on the back of another dominant campaign, having won a record-extending 8th Asia Cup title recently. It is not all hunky-dory, though, with India still having a few areas to address, particularly their fielding, while the middle order will need to step up if called upon.
A special occasion awaits - Regardless of the result, this is going to be a landmark day for Japan. They played their first T20I in 2019, and today marks the first time they will face a Full Member nation in the format. Taking on a powerhouse like India on home soil is a significant occasion for everyone involved, and Japan will simply want to embrace the moment, enjoy the experience and give it everything.
Hello, everyone - It is Day 2 of cricket's action at the 2026 Asian Games, and we are down to the final quarter-final. After a rain-affected opening day, the sun is out in Nisshin as India prepare to take on hosts Japan at Korogi Sports Park. In a proper David versus Goliath battle, the two sides go head-to-head with a semi-final spot at stake. Bangladesh await in the last four after their quarter-final against China was washed out, with their higher seeding sending them through.
... MATCH DAY ...
The pursuit of glory - Every four years, thousands of athletes across Asia chase the same dream. A medal around their neck that makes years of early mornings, sacrifice, and relentless training feel worth it. The Asian Games have long been that stage. A continental showcase where household names and unknown competitors alike get their shot at glory, often carrying the hopes of entire nations on their shoulders. Cricket's place at the Games - Cricket's relationship with the Asian Games has been on and off. The sport made its debut at Guangzhou 2010 before returning four years later at Incheon 2014, only to be left out of the programme at Jakarta 2018. It made its comeback at Hangzhou 2022, held in 2023, where India completed a golden double by winning both the men's and women's competitions. No room for a slow start - Aichi Nagoya 2026 marks cricket's fourth appearance at the Asian Games, with Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin set to host all the cricket action across both the men's and women's competitions. The tournament begins directly at the quarter-final stage, leaving no room for second chances. The women's competition features eight teams, with India taking on hosts Japan, Bangladesh facing China, Sri Lanka meeting Malaysia and Pakistan going up against Thailand. Every game therefore carries the weight of a knockout, and the India-Japan contest has all the makings of a David versus Goliath battle. India chasing another gold - Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. are coming off a dominant run at the Asia Cup, where they clinched a record-extending eighth title, and will now be gunning for gold at the Asian Games after topping the podium at the previous edition. There was one striking feature of India's batting during the Asia Cup, though, and that was just how heavily they relied on their openers. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma accounted for 449 of India's 741 runs, which amounted to 60.6 per cent of the team's total. Shafali, in particular, was named Player of the Series after finishing with three half-centuries, while Mandhana's 124 against Hong Kong, China was the standout individual score of the tournament. Middle order faces a test - Jemimah Rodrigues will miss the Asian Games as she continues her recovery from a high-grade right hamstring tear suffered during The Hundred. She was ruled out of both the Asia Cup and Asian Games, leaving India without one of their most established middle-order options. That makes how the middle order fares over the course of this tournament an interesting subplot regarding Harmanpreet Kaur, who struggled for fluency for much of the tournament. Spin to win - The bowling was much more of a collective effort, although the spin department once again formed the backbone. Sree Charani continued her rise after making her T20I debut against England in June 2025 and finished the Asia Cup with 12 wickets, including a four-wicket haul in the final. Deepti Sharma was equally influential, leading the tournament's wicket charts with 14 scalps at an economy rate of 3.84. Prema Rawat also made her presence felt, while the attack is further strengthened by the addition of Shreyanka Patil, who returns to the squad for the first time since the World Cup, where she suffered a tournament-ending right ankle ligament injury. Fielding remains a concern - If there is one area India will want to sharpen up, it is their fielding. There have been moments of sloppiness and missed opportunities, and against stronger opposition, those lapses can prove costly. With the knockout stage leaving little room for error, India will want to be much cleaner in the field as they begin their Asian Games campaign. Japan's big moment - For Japan, this is a huge occasion on home soil and perhaps the biggest challenge they could have asked for in the quarter-finals. They will be led by Mai Yanagida, the 33-year-old all-rounder who is Japan's most-capped women's T20I player. Yanagida, along with her deputy Erika Oda, are the only two Japanese batters to have scored more than 500 runs in the format, and a lot will rely on them with the bat. Wicketkeeper-batter Akari Nishimura is another experienced name, who has played more than 50 T20Is, and her experience will be valuable against an Indian attack that will look to put Japan under pressure from the outset. Japan's young star - The one to watch out for will be the 16-year-old Ayaka Kato Stafford. The all-rounder has already racked up 321 runs and 12 wickets with her leg-spin in just 9 T20Is for Japan. Born in South Brisbane to a Japanese mother and Australian father, Kato-Stafford has also represented Australia Under-19s in the past. Her all-round ability makes her one of the more intriguing players in the Japanese side, and this will be a chance to test herself against some of the biggest names in the women's game. Chandel leads the attack - When it comes to their bowling attack, left-arm seamer Ahilya Chandel has the most wickets for Japan in women's T20Is and is also more than handy with the bat. She has also had stints with Delhi Capitals as a net bowler in the WPL, giving her some exposure to a higher level of the game. Erika Toguchi-Quinn and Nonoha Yasumoto will also be vital with the ball for the hosts, while the skipper Yanagida brings plenty of experience to the attack. Form (Last 5 completed T20Is, most recent first) - IND - WWWWW | JAP - WLLLW. A new venue adds intrigue - Korogi Sports Park is still something of an unknown quantity, having only recently been remodelled from a baseball facility into a cricket ground. The venue hosted matches during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier earlier this year, giving it some exposure to international cricket. A hybrid surface will be in use, making the pitch an interesting one to read, with both pace and spin potentially coming into play. Japan Women have nothing to lose and everything to gain, while India Women will look to make their quality count from the very first ball. It all sets up an intriguing contest at the Korogi Sports Park.
