Time for the national anthems - The giant flags of both countries are unveiled in the centre, which is met with a big cheer from the crowd. PITCH REPORT - Raunak Kapoor is pitchside and says it is an evening fixture, so the temperatures have dropped, and about the weather, and possibility of rain, he mentions the worst has passed, hopefully. On the dimensions, he reveals the boundaries measure 55 metres in the square pockets, 65 metres on one side and 63 on the other, though he notes the sixes in recent games have been hit down the ground where the boundary measures 70 meters. 6.08 pm GMT update - It's official - The pitch inspection is done and the official start time is out as well. The first ball will be bowled at 6.35 pm GMT. So one assumes that the toss will take place in about 5-10 minutes from now. Do not go anywhere, the coin flip in Southampton is not too far away now. Whether we get a full 20 overs a side, though, remains very much up in the air, much like the clouds hovering over the Hampshire Bowl right now. Wink wink.
It is also worth noting that the FIFA World Cup 2026 is running parallel to proceedings here, with four back-to-back games lined up through the evening. France and defending champions Argentina are both set to get their campaigns underway this evening, giving sports fans plenty to choose from. Though those inside the Hampshire Bowl will be hoping the umpires hand them a reason to stay tuned to cricket.

We are hearing that an official pitch inspection has been scheduled for 6 pm GMT, that is, in about 10 minutes' time from now. The exact timing remains unclear, but there is still a fair chunk of time left before the over reduction kicks in. So there's a fair bit of buffer yet for a full game.
5.40 pm GMT update - Pleasing news - Seems like the rain has stopped in Southampton and the covers are also coming off. Both England and Ireland players are out on the field going through their warm-ups, which is an encouraging sign. However, there is still no official word yet on when the toss will take place. We shall have it soon as the conditions brighten up out there.
5.33 pm GMT update - The wait continues - The match should have been underway by now, but the rain has had other plans. There is some encouragement, though, with reports suggesting the intensity has reduced considerably and the Super Soppers are out doing the rounds as well. But even for the toss to take place, the rain needs to stop completely. Until then, we play the waiting game.
5.11 pm GMT update - Still raining - Ummm... looks like the rain has picked up now and we are hearing that more covers are being dragged out to protect the playing area. The weather forecast predicts overcast conditions and scattered showers expected through the evening. We could be in for a significant delay here. The crowd has retreated to seek shelter as well. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed for the rain to relent as soon as possible.
5.02 pm GMT update - Toss delayed! It is still drizzling at the moment. Not the heaviest of rains, but still fair enough. The floodlights are on, and the skies have turned considerably darker and gloomier over the Hampshire Bowl. And the toss has been officially delayed. Let's hope that the conditions clear out soon and we get a full game of cricket.
4.50 pm GMT update - Covers are on - Well, not the most pleasing news coming in from the Hampshire Bowl. Just as the match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka wrapped up, the drizzle moved in and the covers were quickly brought on to protect the pitch and the square.
