A big Sunday awaits - There was differential movement and variable bounce in the last couple of sessions. The surface offered the bowlers something today, and run-making wasn't as straightforward a business as it was a day ago. Batting is only going to get trickier from here, and New Zealand know that. Every run they add to this lead makes the chase a steeper climb for England over the final two days. The morning session on Day 4 could well be where this Test is decided. England need early inroads, a fresh Archer spell to set the tone, and they need to keep the deficit from ballooning. But they will not be without hope either. Four years ago, at this very ground, against this very opposition, they chased down 299. That memory will not be far from their minds. But first, they will have to bowl the Kiwis out. Archer spits fire, Kiwis give it back - Archer gave England something to cheer about in the evening. The two openers who mounted a 317-run opening stand in the first inning, were consumed inside 5 overs this time. Atkinson then removed Nicholls despite Brook putting down the chance first. Three down for 51, England could sense an opening to further dent the Kiwis on a tiring pitch. But Ravindra and Mitchell had no interest in handing it over. They dug in, weathered everything thrown at them, and put on an unbroken 69 together. Ravindra reached fifty with calm authority, Mitchell stood firm against some probing stuff from Bashir. Though the scoring pace dipped considerably in the final stages, one feels that the momentum has shifted back slightly in favour of the tourists, and England have quite some work to do come the fourth morning.
The ball did the talking - New Zealand wrestled their way back since the morning session, but Brook was the splinter they just could not pull out. From the moment he walked in, the intent was obvious, the bat was swinging, and the runs were coming at a clip that made England's lower order look a little less fragile. But Foulkes, the concussion sub for the Kiwis, got his man and snapped a 32-run stand, and suddenly New Zealand were right back in the game, firmly. From there, New Zealand didn't let the tail wag for long. With the second new ball, there was not a great deal of lateral movement, but the ball occasionally reared up to cause discomfort for the batters. Though there was decent resistance from Archer and Atkinson, once it was broken, they were soon after bowled out for 354, handing an 84-run lead to the Kiwis.
A slippery morning - Ben Duckett had been waiting for a score of substance, and he finally got there with a century that owed as much to fortune as it did to skill. England began the day 215 behind and lost three wickets inside the opening half hour, with Root and Stokes among them, unable to make anything stick. Smith followed soon after, and England were in real trouble. Brook and Atkinson offered some resistance and briefly steadied things nicely with a 32-run stand.
STUMPS, DAY 3 - Well, Archer did everything he could to get that over done as quickly as possible, and squeeze another one in. Bashir was ready at the other end as well, but Rod Tucker says that time's up and clips the bails off, and that is Stumps at Trent Bridge. The Moving Day has well and truly moved at a good pace. Both sides landed blows and hit back hard after being pushed, making it a day that was pretty much even-steven. New Zealand had the better of the first two sessions comfortably, with England offering only brief resistance in patches throughout the day. But with a lead of 204 with seven wickets in hand, the Kiwis head into Day 4 in a very good position.

It has been a fascinating passage of play with England again trying to tighten their grip. Jofra Archer has just gone off after a tormenting spell as his fire consumed both the Kiwi openers. There has been differential movement and variable bounce in this session. The pitch has something in it and batting has become a bit more difficult than the first couple of days or so and is expected to deteriorate further as the game progresses. Tom Latham goes for a flick, but plays over the wrong line and is struck hard on the back pad. Archer does not even bother to appeal and is off for a celebratory run, confident enough that he has his man. Rod Tucker eventually raises his finger, and Latham walks without reviewing. A marathon 317-run stand in the first innings, but the Kiwi opening pair lasts just 6 balls this time around. New Zealand are 4/1, leading by 88 runs.
