Oh wow. He comes for a second interview. The captain of England Under-19, Thomas Rew, says that he is very happy to get off to a good start and hopes to carry the momentum forward. Shares that the pitch was better than it was last time and lauds his bowlers for their effort. He adds that when they went out to bat, the focus was on playing strong shots. Rew feels that they can be more consistent. Praises the spinners for doing really well, especially with the shorter boundaries in play. He also says he enjoys the captaincy and likes being involved in the game, and values having other players around him to offer support.

Simbarashe Mudzengerere, the captain of Zimbabwe Under-19, says it is not a good start to the tournament but believes the team will be fine if they improve their execution. He feels they need to give themselves a bit of time, avoid rushing, and stay at the crease. Mentions that the moment you stay at the wicket, you win. Mudzengerere points out that the England batters attacked the cow corner region effectively and picked their shots well. Tells that they are close to doing well and only need slightly better execution to turn things around.

England's skipper, Thomas Rew, has been adjudged the Player Of The Match, for an unbeaten 86 (66). Rew says the wicket was better than it was the other day against Pakistan and gives credit to Ben Mayes for the way he batted. Adds that it was simply a case of talking to each other and doing the job, and denies that there was any discussion about finishing the chase early. Shares that they just batted, and never looked at the scoreboard. Rew further says that they took their chances, and it came off. Mentions that the smaller part of the ground was a talking point, with a plan to target the spinners on that part, particularly. Concludes by saying that whenever they bat, the aim is to be responsible and stay there till the end.

Tough pill to swallow for Zimbabwe. Their opening match against Scotland was washed out and dare we say, that match would have been a much better chance for them to play as an opener. England were way too powerful and their bowling simply came unstuck. But as a ray of bright light, one has to laud their batting, which showed positive character. They did not back down and were determined to play 50 overs. However, a change in mindset is needed. As many as 4 batters got starts with 3 not converting. Additionally, the batters seemed to be content in avoiding losing wickets and not necessarily trying to change the tempo. Of course, this is at the grassroot level but these are the things they need to keep in mind for further development.

Continuing on the previous paragraph, it is hard to find faults in the batting when you have chased down a 200-plus total in under 30 overs. But a critic and a perfectionist will say that the opposition did not possess the bowling attack of the greatest calibre and even the two wickets lost, were gifted. Waste of opportunities. But, a win is a win. England will be happy by qualifying for the Super Sixes by topping the league and will now aim for a clean sweep. Ben Mayes and Thomas Rew looked in excellent touch and what impressed more was once set, the batters decided to step it on, showing their ruthlessness. Their unbeaten 167-run stand literally crushed any thoughts of a fightback from the hosts, when the Brits were 42/2.

Talking about being better for England, first, with the ball. They had Zimbabwe on the back foot multiple times. First, they struck on the third ball of the match. But took a whole of 57 balls before striking the second time. With bowler-friendly conditions, that was a waste of the new ball. Next, they enforced a collapse in the middle overs, reducing Zimbabwe from 107/3 to 153/7. But could not bowl out their opposition, being made to bowl all the 50 overs. Having bowled so brilliantly against Pakistan, they will feel this as a let down. Manny Lumsden picked up 3 wickets but should have got more, had he landed the ball in the right areas with the new ball.

Our preview read that England SHOULD be the favourites for this clash, but you can never say in Under-19 matches. Seems like Thomas Rew took that up personally and as a challenge. They have come out here and shown their dominance, albeit there are some areas where they will feel they could have done better.

Clinical. Dominant. Use any adjective of your choice. But England have stormed to a chase of 209 in 28 overs. At a run rate of under 7.5. The hosts would feel bruised, not just because of the loss, but because of the manner of the loss. A real hammering.

However, they have got two wickets because of some poor shots by the batters, gifting their wickets away. Having said that, the 20th century champions are firmly in control in this new-age game. OUT! CAUGHT! And now, I am reminded of Michael Atherton. Not because of the shot, but because of something said by the great man. This is an incident somewhere in 2024, when Australia had toured England for a white-ball series. Athers had just finished praising Bethell and on the next ball, the youngster threw his wicket away, to a pretty innocuous ball by Glenn Maxwell. 'Kiss of death', was his comment on air at that moment. Moores reminds me of that. We just praised him and on the next ball, he gifts it away. On a length, wide outside off, Moores slaps it uppishly, but straight to Nathaniel Hlabangana at deep point who does not have to move an inch! OUT! CAUGHT! Now, that is a real gift. The trap was set and Dawkins has jumped right into it. After his first six, the fielder at point was pushed back. Mazvitorera bowled it short and wide outside off, challenging Dawkins' ego to take him on. Dawkins accepts the challenge and slaps it real hard. But he hits it straight to Dhruv Patel at deep point who makes no mistake! The home side is overjoyed to see its plan come to fruition while Dawkins walks back, cutting a sorry figure. He departs for 11 (10) and Zimbabwe have the early wicket they needed. England Under-19 are 22/1 and need another 187 runs from 282 balls.

WIDE. Second one in the over. Seemed like a slower ball, because the ball barely carried to the keeper. There was a bit of wobble too, after bouncing, and the keeper did well to collect that.
