Time to listen to Marnus Labuschagne - About the challenges coming to Bangladesh, he admits that Bangladesh presents a fresh set of challenges, with many in the group unfamiliar with these conditions. Notes that the focus is on learning quickly and reading what the surface has to offer, while the opposition and the goals remain well understood. He adds that the senior players carry a responsibility to lead from the front in that regard, setting the tone in terms of adaptability and reading the game situation early. On the Pakistan series, Labuschagne reflects that despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives to take, with the side doing a lot of things right along the way. He details that this is a fresh opportunity and one the group is eager to grab with both hands from ball one.
Coach's word - Bangladesh's Head Coach, Phil Simmons, is up for a quick chat. He says that all the series are important to them. The ones they played against New Zealand and Pakistan were too, as they are preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Reckons that they need to keep improving and keep moving forward. Says that the domestic competitions are also going on, so the players are playing. Simmons shares that it is pleasing to see Bangladesh play with three seamers. The batters are doing well as well, and the important thing is that they are enjoying themselves.
PITCH REPORT - Brad Hogg is pitchside and gives his analysis. He describes the pitch as one of the hardest and most grass-covered pitches he has seen at the venue, with conditions clearly offering plenty of seam movement and extra bounce. He notes that Bangladesh's pace attack is well-equipped to exploit these conditions, which will make life difficult for the batters. Hogg adds that there is very little dryness on the surface, meaning spinners are unlikely to get much traditional turn. However, they can still remain in the contest through skid and extra bounce, provided they are accurate. He also points out that shot selection will be crucial, with sweep shots particularly risky due to the chance of top edges because of the bounce. Overall, he views it as an excellent surface for competitive cricket, where seamers are expected to dominate early while disciplined spin can still have an impact as the game progresses.

The captain of Bangladesh - Mehidy Hasan Miraz says the excitement in the camp is real, backed by a strong run of results across the last two to three series. He adds that confidence is high in both the batting and bowling departments heading into this challenge. On the pitch, he notes that the surface looks good and, having played here recently in both international and domestic cricket, gives them an edge. He details that posting a strong first innings score will be the priority. About the team combination, Miraz informs that they have three fast bowlers, three spinners, six batters and two all-rounders. He feels that they have a really good combination and is confident with his team.
The captain of Australia - Josh Inglis says that the reasons for his decision to bowl first is due to the unknown conditions here and also they saw a bit of moisture and nip around early in the New Zealand series so they want to exploit it. Inglis mentions that it is all about adapting to the conditions early and communicating with the group. Reckons they have had a couple of good training sessions and are ready for the challenge. Informs that Xavier Bartlett is back in the side and also Liam Scott is making his debut, calling him an exciting prospect.
TOSS - Both captains are out in the middle for the coin flip, and the good news is that the sun is out now, though there is a bit of cloud cover around and conditions are muggy. Mehidy gives it a flick and Inglis calls it correctly. Australia have elected to BOWL first.
Weather conditions and pitch expectations - The overcast conditions expected throughout the day could bring seam movement into play early, making the new ball period particularly challenging for the openers. Clouds tend to do funny things to a moving ball, and if the seamers find assistance in the air, the Powerplay could set the tone for everything that follows. Pace to have a say? Usually, when you hear Bangladesh, the first thing that comes to mind is spinners. How many are playing? Bangladesh and spin have always gone together like tea and rain. But things have been different this year. Dhaka has hosted five of the five ODIs in 2026 so far, and the pacers have outshone the spinners by quite a distance. The tally reads 55 wickets by pacers as compared to spin’s 21. If that is the case here, emerging paceman Nahid Rana will be a real handful. He has claimed 14 wickets at this venue in 2026 alone, the most by any bowler, and he will have the experienced Taskin and Mustafizur alongside him, two bowlers who bring their own bag of tricks. For the Aussies, the likes of Ellis and Dwarshuis will come into focus to lead the charge. A pace-heavy contest might actually suit the tourists just fine, after weeks of grinding through the low and slow surfaces they endured in Pakistan. But you just can’t rule out spin in Bangladesh.
Depleted visitors, determined hosts - A bruising series defeat in Pakistan, and now straight to Dhaka with a squad that is anything but full strength. And for all the cricket these two nations have played, this remains only the third time the Aussies have toured this region for ODIs, following trips in 2006 and 2011. The head-to-head record is as one-sided as it gets. 20 wins from 21 completed games, and just a solitary defeat. The hosts have been a different beast at home in recent times in white-ball cricket. But Australia remain the one team they simply have not cracked on their own turf, losing all six ODIs played here. The only time Bangladesh ever beat them was in 2005, and it was not in Dhaka or Sydney but in Cardiff, of all places. Ricky Ponting, at his prime, was leading Australia then. Habibul Bashar had the armband for the hosts. So the wait has been long enough and the hosts would aim to end it this time around.

It began in January, as a precursor warm-up type for the T20 World Cup, when the Aussies embarked on a 3-match T20I tour of Pakistan. That was followed by a trip to Sri Lanka to play the World Cup, and unfortunately, could not progress to play in India for the same tournament, as they got knocked out in the first round itself. But then came the IPL on Indian shores and the next 2 months went over there only. Further, they returned to Pakistan to complete their white-ball tour of January, this time for a longer version of ODIs. And finally, they come to the last stop, a 6-match white-ball tour of Bangladesh. Dare we say, this might be their biggest trek in Asia ever! Easier series? Don't even think about it. If you are looking at the rankings and sum up that okay, number 9 is hosting a number 3, then let's just remind you that just like age, ranking is just a number. You can just cast a look back at Sunday's French Open final and marvel at how a lower-ranked player took Sasha Zverev to the hilt. Sticking to cricket, Bangladesh have not lost an ODI series at home since 2024. The opponents have been Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan and New Zealand. Enough data to say that the Tigers are roaring in their own habitat. Kangaroos hopping out? Well, that's what it seems like.No Mitchell Marsh (ankle injury).No Travis Head (personal reasons).No Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood (workload management). Plainly put, with ultimate respect, this seems like an impoverished Aussie side, leading to a foregone conclusion of another Bangla home win. Talking about the hosts themselves, they look strong as ever, especially at home, with the likes of skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das in impeccable form. Additionally, after a fairly indifferent past few months, Mustafizur Rahman is finding his mojo back while Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam are growing in stature. And yes, don't forget Nahid Rana, who is quickly becoming an all-format star. Another spin test? The temptation would be really high. After watching The Team In Yellow fizz out against spin in Pakistan, that too, against newcomers, Bangladesh would be tempted to put them further under mire. So don't be surprised if you get a Benson and Burner's deck. Batting first has been significantly tough in this country and now, with the matches being shifted to daytime to save electricity, the essence of spin and slowing down of the decks is even more pronounced. However, Bangladesh themselves have shown that if you have quality, battle the conditions early on and spend some time on the wicket, you can produce big scores. Does Australia's so-called bench possess that quality? From what we have seen so far, not just in alien conditions but even at home, it has primarily been the seniors who have been contributing. So in terms of seniority for this series, there will be added responsibility on the likes of Josh Inglis, Matthew Short, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa, but it is also another opportunity for the juniors to show that they can belong at this level. 2011 - The last time Australia toured Bangladesh for an ODI series. They played a Test series in 2017 and a T20I series in 2021, but it will be fair enough to say that 2011 was the last occasion when a full-strength Aussie side played cricket on these shores. One can understand Bangladesh being miffed about oppositions not sending full-strength sides to their country (New Zealand too, sent a second-string side), but that cannot be their problem. You play the sport, not the opposition. A perk awaiting them is a 2-match Test tour of Australia, later this year, their first ever down Under since 2003. So not just a series win here, but a whitewash might force teams across the world to take the so-called 'Asian minnows' a bit more seriously. And what is now a one-off series here and there in other countries might become a full-fledged tour in the coming future. Respite from the heat? It seems like the whole world is suffering a heat wave. However, the forecast for Tuesday in Mirpur shows early morning showers and a few intermittent ones in the afternoon. While that might interrupt the game and we might be in danger of a shortened contest, it could give the players some much-needed respite from the heat.
