The home side steps onto the field eager to showcase their rapid growth against a top-tier opposition, while Afghanistan arrive as powerhouse contenders looking to kick off their campaign with total authority.

Time for the men - The curtains have fallen on the women's competition, and now it is time for the men to take centre stage at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. 10 teams are in the hunt for the medals, with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh already seeded into the quarter-finals. The other 6 sides are split into two groups of three, with the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals. That makes every game important right from the word go. Group A has hosts Japan, Afghanistan and Nepal, while Group B consists of Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Oman. The competition gets underway with Afghanistan taking on hosts Japan in the opening game. Aiming to go one better - With their final against India washed out, Afghanistan's lower seeding meant they had to settle for silver last time around. They will be hoping for a different outcome this time, although they have fielded a second-string side led by Darwish Rasooli. Experience meets youth - Najibullah Zadran and Karim Janat bring the bulk of the international experience. Mohammad Akram comes into the tournament after an excellent Shpageeza Cricket League. Akram scored 339 runs in 8 innings, including a hundred and two fifties, and will be one to watch at the top of the order. Ismat Alam impressed with both bat and ball in the Shpageeza League, scoring 294 runs and taking 9 wickets, while the likes of Hassan Eisakhil, Khalid Taniwal and Imran Mir have also been rewarded for their performances in domestic cricket. Variety with the ball - This is where Afghanistan have a particularly interesting mix. Nangeyalia Kharote is expected to lead the spin attack, with leg-spinner Arab Gul adding another option in the middle overs. Farmanullah Safi, Abdollah Ahmadzai and Faridoon Dawoodzai provide the pace options. Karim Janat and Ismat Alam also give Darwish Rasooli additional seam-bowling options, which means Afghanistan have plenty of flexibility when it comes to managing the 20 overs. Japan's chance to shine - Japan faced a group-stage exit at the previous edition of the Asian Games but have gained plenty of experience since then. Only recently, they came within a hit of stunning reigning T20I champions India in the one-off T20I played in the lead-up to the Asian Games. Experienced core - Captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming is Japan's leading T20I run-scorer and has been one of the mainstays of the batting order. Ibrahim Takahashi and Declan Suzuki also bring significant international experience, with both having played more than 50 T20Is.
