Before picking your diamond jewellery, you need to know the basics of diamonds, which are often categorised as 4Cs

Cut - The cut of diamond refers to the symmetry, facets, polish and other factors that ensure its brightness and sparkle

The cut of diamond is not the same as the shape. Diamonds are cut in many shapes, but only some retain the brilliance

The most popular diamond is the round cut. It retains maximum brilliance as it has the highest number of facets

Colour - The grading of diamond is done based on the lack of colour. Pure and colourless diamonds are most expensive

There are also rare diamonds that come in all kinds of natural colours - from black, blue and purple to pink, red and green

Clarity - The clarity of diamond depends on the internal and external characteristics of the stones (inclusions and blemishes)

The clarity ranges from Flawless(FL), Internally Flawless (IF), Very Slightly Included (VSI), Included(IL), etc

Carat - The carat weight does not have a direct bearing upon the brilliance of a diamond but it can influence the price

One carat is equal to 0.2 grams which is roughly the weight of a paper clip. Those less than 1 carat are expressed in cents
